On January 16, 2009, Israeli shells hit the Gaza home of Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, instantly killing three of his daughters and a niece. For many people this would have led to a sense of abiding hatred, but for Dr Abuelish, who has worked in Israeli hospitals caring for patients and delivering babies of both Palestinians and Israelis, the opposite was the case. He set up the "Daughters for Life Foundation", wrote the book "I shall not hate", and– in 2010 – was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
