A few jobs ago I used to work with an older lady from Malaysia who loved to speak Canto to me when she knew I could speak it (her family speaks Hokkien at home)
I didn't know then that in Malaysian Canto, 溝 = dollar = 元／蚊
and "lui" = money = 錢
So the first time the conversation got to money, she said something like (can't remember exactly): "而家出面啲野好貴，去飲餐茶都要成五十溝(AUD)，你趁年輕要揾多啲lui啦"

Thanks for generalizing the dialects from Malaysian Chinese. It is very interesting. My Dad was born in Malaysia Malacca but my family does speak pretty traditional Mandarin. Same language but with different mixture of local orientations. I guess this is another proof of adaptation and evolution ?!
But it sure is fun if you know one language and are in a different place to speak in same wordings and sentences but resulted in totally different meanings.
