Emmanuel Adebayor believes Theo Walcott has the ability to become as good, if not better, than former Arsenal idol Thierry Henry at Emirates Stadium.
The young Englishman had only scored one goal for the club prior to Tuesday’s Champions League game against Slavia Prague, but served notice of his burgeoning talent with a well-taken double.
His second strike was straight out of the Henry repertoire as he raced through on goal and produced a cultured finish with the outside of the boot, and the plaudits have been pouring in for the 18-year-old since the 7-0 rout.
After a sometimes frustrating start to life in North London – which saw him suffer a lengthy goal drought and a persistent shoulder problem last season – Walcott has shone in the past few games and the hype around the talented teen has increased once more with comparisons to Henry an inevitable consequence.
Now Adebayor – who enjoyed a good understanding with Arsenal’s record scorer last season – believes Walcott can emulate the feats of his predecessor if he continues his progression.
"He is still learning but I can promise you in a few years, Theo will be up with Thierry,” said Adebayor.
"He may be more than Thierry because he's learning very fast, he's progressing and in a few years Theo will be where he needs to be.
"It's the first time I've played with him as a forward but he's a very good player. He's got the speed, he's very fast, makes runs behind and he's got some skills as well so it's very easy to adapt with players like that.
"He took his chance well. The keeper gave him the ball and he was in the best position at the best time. For the second goal he just ran and showed how quick he is. He showed that he can be a good finisher as well and is very good for the team.
"I am here to adapt with everyone. Last year I played with Thierry, Robin van Persie, Julio Baptista. This year I'm playing with Robin, Theo, Eduardo. I'm ready to play with anyone that they put up front with me."
