簡介﹕ Bill Shankly's £35,000 swoop for Keegan from Scunthorpe in May 1971 proved one of the shrewdest transfer moves ever. He was signed as a midfielder and potential replacement for long-serving Ian Callaghan. But Keegan's sparkling display up front in a pre-season practice match persuaded Shankly to plunge him into his debut alongside John Toshack in attack at the start of the 1971-72 season.

Keegan scored after just 12 minutes, Liverpool beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 and another epoch in Anfield history had begun. The confident recruit, born in Armthorpe near Doncaster, hit big-time football like a whirlwind. He swiftly won England under 23 recognition with the first of 63 full caps coming within 18 months as he soared to pop star status.  His potent, trophy-capturing alliance with Toshack became feared throughout England and Europe before Keegan joined Hamburg for £500,000 in 1977, going on to become European Player of the Year twice.

He scored 100 Liverpool goals and said farewell by helping to win their first European Cup with a 3-1 conquest of Borussia Moenchengladbach in Rome. Later he played for Southampton and Newcastle - whom he also managed - received an OBE and in 1999 became England manager.

簡介﹕
It's a sign of how desperate Liverpudlians had become that Paul Ince was not only welcomed with open arms by the fans, but they had practically been clamouring for Roy Evans to sign him as the answer to all of our problems. Liverpool at the time were a good side capable of playing pretty football, but were regarded as having a 'soft centre.' The midfield duo of John Barnes and Jamie Redknapp were excellent at keeping hold of the ball, but not so good at going out and winning it. The concensus was that the reds needed a ball winner, someone who could drive the team forward from the middle of the park and lead by example. Former Manchester United man Ince was seen as the best available at that time, and when it emerged that he was looking to return to England after a successful stint in Italy, Roy Evans made his move. A fee of ?.5mil was agreed with the Italians and Ince became a Liverpool player in the summer of 1997. The prospect of an Ince/Redknapp midfield engine room was a mouth watering one, and the early signs looked good. Despite some inconsistent performances from the team, Ince started brightly, scoring on his home debut against Leicester, a game which the reds lost 2-1. Ince had replaced the ageing Barnes in the side, and had immediately been installed as captain, also at the expense of Barnes, who chose to move on to Newcastle United rather than play reserve team football for the club at which he had established himself as a legend. Ince had his moments, and when he was good he was very good, but much of the time he was anonymous, particularly in games against lesser opposition. Too often he would go missing in games at the likes of Coventry, Leicester and Everton. It was also claimed that he was having far too much influence off the field, most notably in managerial matters, ironically an accusation that was also levelled at his predecessor Barnes. This undoubtedly came about because of the perceived image of Roy Evans as being weak, and not in control of his players. Whether or not there were any substance to the claims about Ince's unhealthy influence is unclear, but it is interesting that almost from the first day that Gerard Houllier took sole charge, he encountered problems with Ince. In fact, Houllier purchased Jean-Michel Ferri purely in case he encountered a serious enough problem with Ince that would have forced him to take drastic action. Ferri was never going to be a part of Houllier's long term plan, but the manager needed to have someone available should the problems with Ince escalate to the point where he could no longer pick him. Ince's performances under Houllier were very much hit and miss. His lack of discipline infuriated Houllier, no more so than when he was needlessly sent off in Valencia, which meant he missed the next round through suspension. As a result, the reds had to take on Celta Vigo with an inexperienced midfield containing Murphy, Thompson and Gerrard. Houllier wanted a defensive midfield player that would sit in front of the back four and offer them protection. Ince wanted to bomb forward at every opportunity and be the hero. He would get his wish towards the end of the 1998/99 season, when injuries to all of the clubs strikers meant that the man who liked to refer to himself as 'the Guv'nor' was pushed into emergency centre forward duty. He did quite well in his new role, scoring against Spurs and then hitting a famous equaliser as the reds came from two down to draw with Man United at Anfield. However, as a midfield player he was simply not carrying out the instructions his manager was giving him. There were numerous reports of bust ups behind the scenes, mainly involving Ince and Phil Thompson. Reports of infighting at the club regularly adorned the back pages of national tabloids, and it is no secret that Ince was responsible for the majority of them. It was obvious that the reds had a 'mole' in the camp, and that mole was Ince. The reds were hardly off the back pages, and often they were on the front pages too. Never before had the club seen so much dirty laundry washed in public, and it was no surprise when that summer Gerard told Ince that he was no l,onger wanted. He eventually joined the 'Dad's Army' up at Middlesborough, and it surprised no-one when he launched a scathing attack on Houllier and Thompson just days after his departure (co-incidentally these comments appeared in the same Sunday tabloid that had ran all of the 'Anfield Mole' stories!). Amongst other things, Ince claimed that Liverpool needed to get rid of Houllier and Tommo or they would take the club down. Within two years the duo had lead the reds to an unprecedented cup trreble, whereas Ince's Middlesboro needed a win on the penultimate game of the season to save themselves from relegation. Enough said really.

簡介﹕
Standing supreme as Liverpool's all-time scoring king the lean Welshman was one of the deadliest strikers in football history, blending superb anticipation with lethal finishing. His attack partnership with Kenny Dalglish is widely rated the best ever in British football.

Rush became Britain's most expensive teenager when Bob Paisley paid £300,000 to sign him from Chester in 1980. During his two-part Anfield career, split by a season with Juventus in 1987-88 when he left and returned for a combined £6 million, Rush scored 346 goals in 660 senior outings, although in the League only he was 16 goals short of Roger Hunt's club record 245.

It was about the only one to elude him. Rush's haul of 44 FA Cup goals (39 of them for Liverpool) is a 20th century record while his five-goal total in FA Cup Finals (two in 1986 and 1989 and one in 1992 all on winning Liverpool sides) is an all-time best by an individual. Rush shares with Geoff Hurst the League Cup scoring record of 49 and was the first player to win that competition five times, completing his nap hand as Liverpool captain against Bolton in 1995. He scored 10 times in 18 Wembley outings for the club.

He also collected five Championship medals, one European Cup and was awarded the MBE. Rush scored an all-time Mersey derby record of 25 goals against Everton, won Europe's Golden Boot with 32 League goals in 1984 when he was also double Footballer of the Year and captained Wales, for whom he scored a record 28 goals in 73 games. He joined Leeds in 1996 and later played for Newcastle, Wrexham and Sydney Olympic.

簡介﹕
The short and stormy period Graeme Souness had as Liverpool manager several years after being a player at Anfield should never cloud the fact that he was one of the most inspirational captains in the club's history, a tough-tackling, ball-winning midfielder who took no nonsense from any opponent and whose mere presence intimidated the opposing team at the same time as lifting his own.

Graeme was born in Edinburgh but his first professional club was in England. Although a member of the team which won the F.A. Youth cup for Tottenham, he never played a competitive first-team fixture for Spurs and eventually moved to Middlesbrough in January 1973. It was on Tees-side that he made his name, helping 'Boro win the Second Division by an astonishing 15 points from second-placed Luton Town in 1974 and it was not surprising that bigger clubs soon started to make enquiries about the elegant midfield player with the ferocious shot who had such passion for the game.

Liverpool made their move in January 1978 when Graeme was 24 years old and still clearly had his best years ahead of him. A European Cup winners' medal only months after he arrived on Merseyside was just a taste of what was to come for him and his new club. Over the next six seasons, Souness only missed 20 First Division fixtures and won FIVE League championship medals. Apart from their domination of the domestic game, Liverpool were the team most-feared in Europe as well and after Nottingham Forest had taken their European crown away from them and gone on to win and retain the giant trophy, it was finally reclaimed in 1981. That was also the first year that Liverpool won the Football League cup, a competition they had taken none too seriously in its early days but which had guaranteed a Wembley final and a European place for its winners for some time.

Liverpool only played in the Champions' cup during Graeme's time as a player but still won the League cup on a record four successive occasions. Along with Phil Neal, Alan Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish, Sammy Lee & Ian Rush, Souness played in all four finals (although he was absent for the 1981 replay with West Ham) and scored with a long-range left-foot drive in the Maine Road replay with Everton in 1984, the only goal of two tense and fiercely-contested matches. That was Graeme's final season as a Liverpool player. Rumours had been rife for a while that he would be making a big-money move abroad but the player himself stayed focused on what would turn out to be the most successful season in Liverpool's history.

The club reached their 4th European cup final by winning every away leg and in the second-leg of the semi-final with Dinamo Bucharest, Souness was attacked verbally and physically by Rumanian players, incensed that he had broken the jaw of one of their colleagues in the first meeting at Anfield two weeks previously. He responded, as he usually did when the odds were stacked against him, with a performance of great concentration and discipline, qualities that he would need in abundance when it was discovered that the club's opponents (Roma) for what would turn out to be his farewell Liverpool appearance would have the unfair advantage of playing the final in their own stadium !

Graeme Souness's performance on that memorable night in the Italian capital undoubtedly helped secure his move to Sampdoria shortly afterwards. By now a regular in the Scottish international team, he helped Sampdoria win the Italian cup and even scored in the final. After two successful years in Italy, he returned to his homeland to become player-manager at Glasgow Rangers and immediately set about the task of ensuring that they would become the club to beat in Scotland.

After nearly five years at Ibrox and numerous domestic trophies, Souness arrived at Anfield in the Spring of 1991 in the wake of Kenny Dalglish's decision to step down and after Ronnie Moran had filled the position as caretaker-manager while the club's Board thought carefully about who his successor might be. Graeme bought and sold with the same almost reckless approach he had shown in Scotland but what might have worked north of the border did not have the same effect in England.

His triple heart by-pass operation days after the club's F.A. cup semi-final with Portsmouth in 1992 and the eventual successful in the final against Sunderland gave him more time to achieve what he wanted as Liverpool manager. The F.A. cup 3rd round defeat to Second Division Bolton Wanderers in 1993 coupled with an alarming slump in League form might have ended his reign earlier that it did. But even Graeme's close friendship with Liverpool chairman David Moores could not survive another humiliating home F.A. cup defeat - this time against Bristol City - and his reign as Liverpool manager ended shortly afterwards.

The turbulent three years he was in charge at Anfield turned many supporters against him. But they will still recall what he brought to the club as a player, many remarkable years of success with numerous trophies and unforgettable performances. Graeme Souness played over 350 times for Liverpool and scored over 50 goals. He deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest players ever to wear the famous red shirt.

簡介﹕
Steve McManaman became the first high profile Liverpool player to leave the club on a Bosman-style free transfer when he joined Spanish giants Real Madrid during the summer of 1999.

A winger, blessed with exceptional dribbling skills, McManaman was raised just a stones throw away from Anfield, in nearby Kirkdale. A boyhood Evertonian he joined the Reds straight from school and as an apprentice cleaned John Barnes' boots.

He rose through the Anfield ranks and in December 1990 his progress was rewarded when he made his senior bow, appearing as a second half substitute for Peter Beardsley in a 2-0 home win against Sheffield United. The opening game of the following season saw him make his full debut against Oldham Athletic and four days later he scored the first of his - goals for the Reds in a 2-1 defeat at Maine Road.

He celebrated the end of his first full season in the first team by starring in the FA Cup final triumph over Sunderland and three years later he shone at Wembley again, scoring two goals and picking up the man-of-the-match award in the Coca Cola Cup Final success against Bolton Wanderers.

On the international front, McManaman won his first England cap against Nigeria in November 1994, coming on as a 25th minute substitute for the injured Robert Lee. His full debut came against Colombia in September 1995.

A scorer of spectacular goals, as fans of Celtic and Arsenal will testify, his emergence as one of the games most exciting talents brought him to the attention of Europe's leading clubs and he almost signed for Barcelona in September 1997.

At the start of the following season he was named club captain but it was to be his last at Anfield. In July 1999 he opted to sign for Real Madrid and he capped his first season at the Bernabeu with a stunning strike in the European Cup Final against Valencia.

簡介﹕
One of the finest goalkeepers in the history of British football, with only Elisha Scott challenging him as Liverpool's best ever, Clemence was voted by BBC listeners in Merseyside's Team of the 20th Century. A native of Skegness, where he was once a deck chair attendant, he was one of the great bargain buys of Anfield history, costing Bill Shankly just ?8,000 from Scunthorpe in June 1967.

He succeeded Tommy Lawrence as regular first choice in 1970 and showed exceptional abilities as last line of defence, blending superb shot-stopping with amazing agility and judgement.

Clemence played 61 times for England, less than half the total of his 125-cap contemporary Peter Shilton even though many pundits rated the Liverpool man superior. In the great 1978-79 title-winning

campaign, when Bob Paisley's side set a points record of 68 under the old two-points-for-a-win system, ever present Clemence conceded a record low of 16 goals.

After winning 12 major medals at Anfield, and keeping an incredible 335 clean sheets in 665 appearances, Clemence moved on to Tottehnam for ?00,000 in 1981, won a second FA Cup medal, was honoured with an MBE and played on almost to his 40th birthday.

Republic of Ireland international winger Mark Kennedy was signed from Millwall for £2 million in 1995.

An impressive display for Millwall against Arsenal in a cup tie caught Roy Evans eye and he swooped to bring the smooth talking Dubliner to Anfield.

Kennedy's career at Anfield was a case of what might have been. His debut came at Anfield as a substitute against Leeds United. With the Reds 1-0 down he crashed a drive from 30-yards onto the underside of the bar and it somehow stayed out. If that had gone in his career could have been different.

Kennedy was restricted to substitute appearances and with Evans not deploying wingers it was difficult for him to make an impact.

Frustrated, he left for Wimbledon in 1998, and after a successful spell with Manchester City Kevin Keegan sold him to Wolves for £3 million in the summer of 2001.

簡介﹕
A superb goalscorer he let his feats do his talking for him. He was always unselfish and at all times a gentleman - qualities which earned him the sobriquet "Sir Roger" from an adoring Kop.

His first official title did not come until the 2000 New Year Honours list when he received an MBE, one of the last five members of England's 1966 World Cup winning team to be decorated. During the tournament he scored three times in six appearances and, overall, hit 18 goals in 34 England games, underlining the deadly finishing instincts of the 5ft 9in striker.

At Liverpool he developed an incisive attacking partnership with Ian St John and his haul of 245 League goals between 1959 and 1969 stands as a club record, as does his single season total of 41 in the 1961-62 Second Division promotion campaign.

But Liverpool found him by sheer chance. Club scout Bill Jones went to watch a Knutsford player in a Mid Cheshire League game but was alerted, instead, by a Stockton heath player called Hunt - and a majestic Anfield career beckoned. After winning two League titles and an FA Cup winners medal Hunt moved on to Bolton and is a long-serving member of the Pools Panel.

簡介﹕
Dutch striker Erik Meijer left Anfield to return to the German Bundesliga and sign for SV Hamburg on a free transfer on Monday 11th December 2000.

Meijer joined Liverpool on a Bosman transfer from German side Bayer Leverkusen before the start of the 1999-2000 season, and the boyhood Liverpool fan fulfilled an ambition when he joined the Reds with his total enthusiasm and commitment to the cause endearing him to the Liverpool supporters.

Although not a prolific scorer, Meijer proved to be strong in the air and a constant menace to opposing defences with his desire to chase lost causes, and defending from the front like Ian Rush used to do so effectively.

In total, Meijer made 27 appearances for Liverpool. He didn't manage a league goal but his only two Liverpool goals came in the 5-1 Worthington Cup victory over Hull City at Boothferry Park in 1999.

He didn't start a game for Liverpool in the 2000-01 season, but made three appearances off the substitutes bench against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City. A spell on loan at First Division Preston North End followed before the move to Kevin Keegan's old club SV Hamburg.

簡介﹕
Centre-forward Alan moved from Sussex amateur side Worthing to Liverpool when he was 20 years old and made a scoring debut on 5th December 1953 in a 5-2 win home victory over Blackpool. He only played another two times that season and just 7 the following season, in which he scored 3 more goals. Undoubtedly the highlight of Alan's Liverpool career was scoring a brave hat-trick at Huddersfield after pulling a muscle early in the game during1956.

Although he was in and out of the side during the next few years, Alan still finished with an impressive 33 goals from 69 League appearances for Liverpool before being transferred to Tranmere Rovers in February 1961.

簡介﹕
A player hailed by his manager Bill Shankly as being "born to score goals", his career at Anfield was cruelly cut down in its prime by injury. Arrowsmith, born in Hollingworth, Cheshire, was a record-breaking marksman in school and junior football. He cost Liverpool ?,500 in 1960 as a 17-year-old from Ashton United, where he had been a team-mate of future England star Alan Ball whose father, Alan senior, was manager.

He made his debut in October of the following year, the season in which Liverpool won promotion back to the top flight. But he literally shot to prominence in 1963-64, scoring four times against Derby County on his FA Cup debut for the club and hitting 15 League goals in 20 outings to help fire Liverpool to the championship and into Europe for the first time.

But on the eve of the following season, prior to Liverpool's trip to Reykjavik for their European debut, Arrowsmith suffered major damage to his left knee in a tussle with West Ham's Eddie Bovington in the Charity Shield duel at Anfield.

Although he returned to action midway through the season Arrowsmith could never recapture his blistering scoring edge and he moved on to Bury for ?5,000 in 1968 and later played for Rochdale and Macclesfield.

簡介﹕
A local boy from a family with a strong football pedigree, he formed the first of Liverpool's great post-Second World War attack partnerships alongside Albert Stubbins. Balmer's uncles Bill and Bob had played for Everton in the early 1900's and Jack had been on the Goodison books as an amateur. But he signed professional for Liverpool as a 19-year old in 1935 and later became captain.

He was equally at home at centre or inside forward and during the war years won England recognition in what were classed as unofficial internationals. But the resumption of organised League football in 1946-47 brought Balmer the only major winners medal of his career as Liverpool lifted the first post-war championship.

Liverpool's then club record ?2,500 signing of Stubbins from Newcastle produced a bountiful 48-goal attacking partnership with Balmer - each man scoring 24 - in a side that also included the legendary Billy Liddell and subsequent Anfield managers Phil Taylor and Bob Paisley.

During November of that season Balmer earned a niche in the record books by hitting three consecutive League hat tricks: three against Portsmouth, four at Derby and three against Arsenal. He also scored five in the next four games to give him 15 goals in seven matches! He retired in 1952 after scoring 111 goals in 313 League and FA Cup appearances.

簡介﹕

Signed from American major league side Columbus Crew, just ahead of Christmas 1997, Brad Friedel arrived at Anfield after a five year wait. The Reds had been chasing his signature for a while, but difficulties in obtaining a work permit for his services had proved to be a major obstacle. However, his international record with the USA was finally sufficient for him to obtain a work permit and Friedel made his Liverpool debut at Aston Villa in February 1998.

The American kept his place for the rest of the season and started the 1998-99 season as number one, but lost his place to David James. When Sander Westerveld arrived at Anfield Friedel had another problem. Although the work permit was renewed for the 1999-2000 season, only three non-EC players were allowed in the squad, with those places usually going to Patrik Berger, Vladimir Smicer and Stephane Henchoz.

Friedel only played four matches last season when Westerveld was suspended, and with the arrival of Pegguy Arphexad has another battle on his hands. A work permit situation means that the 'keeper is currently in the United States.

簡介﹕
A goalkeeper with a degree in English Literature, Kenny Dalglish signed Mike Hooper from Wrexham for £50,000 in 1985 and he proved a reliable deputy for Bruce Grobbelaar.

Hooper made his Reds debut at Wembley of all places as a second half substitute for the injured Bruce Grobbelaar in the 1-1 draw with Everton in the Charity Shield. Hooper then started the 1986-87 season at Newcastle, becoming only the fourth keeper to start a campaign for Liverpool in 24 years and played the first eight games until Grobbelaar returned.

A memorable moment in Hooper's Reds career came at Stoke City's Victoria Ground in 1987 when deputising for the injured Grobbelaar in an FA Cup 3rd Round tie, and became the hero when he made a series of fine stops to prevent an upset including a brilliant injury time save.

The following season 1988-89 saw Hooper get an extended run in the team. With Grobbelaar ruled out through illness, 'Hooper man' as the KOP dubbed him deputised well as the last line of the Reds defence. However at the turn of 1989, Hooper lost his place to the fit again Grobbelaar.

Under new manager Graeme Souness Hooper bounced back and was preferred to Grobbelaar for the game at Old Trafford against Manchester United in October 1991 and produced a brilliant display as the game ended goalless. However injury set in and Grobbelaar was soon back as Number One.

The 1992-93 season saw the capture of David James to Anfield and it appeared Hooper's days might be over at Liverpool. However, due to James suffering a dip in confidence and Grobbelaar jetting back and forwards to Zimbabwe for World Cup duty Hooper got his chance.

However, despite some notable good display's, playing behind an ever changing back four didn't help communication and after playing in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Bolton at Anfield, Hooper was back on the sidelines once again and that proved to be his last game for the club.

Hooper left Anfield to join Kevin Keegan at Newcastle United in 1993. Things started well for him at St James' Park when he was first choice and almost scored in a game against Everton at Goodison Park when he hit the bar from a goal kick! However, things turned sour at Newcastle when he made a series of errors that had the Geordie boo boys on his back. So bad was the hate mail he received he decided to retire from football.

簡介﹕
When Graeme Souness signed David James from Watford for ?.3 million in the summer of 1992, he declared that the goalkeeper had the potential to be the best in the business.

James made his Reds debut on the opening day of the 1992-93 season in front of the live Sky TV cameras at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest and, although the home side won 1-0, all the talk was about James' outstanding individual display.

He continued to make sensational saves but there were also lapses of concentration, particularly on dealing with crosses that was a problem area. Eager to please, at times James was coming for crosses he had no right to come for and as a consequence was getting punished.

After letting four goals in at Anfield in the incredible 4-4 draw with Chesterfield in a League Cup tie Souness took his young keeper out of the limelight and brought back the experience of Bruce Grobbelaar.

The following season saw Souness trying to sell James and a swap deal with Southampton's Tim Flowers was on the cards. However, Flowers chose to move to Blackburn and it was the appointment of Roy Evans as Liverpool manager that saw James back in business.

He made a stunning match winning save from Everton winger Peter Beagrie in the 2-1 Anfield derby win over Everton in 1994 and with Bruce Grobbelaar leaving Liverpool, James inherited the number one jersey for the 1994-95 season.

As the Reds recognised last line of defence James helped Liverpool win the Coca Cola Cup at Wembley in 1995, making a crucial and spectacular save from Bolton's Alan Thompson with the scores at 2-1.

Unfortunately moments of brilliance were followed by moments of madness and he was dubbed, perhaps rather cruelly, 'calamity James' by the media. Despite Roy Evans' public show of faith in James the mistakes became all too regular and the manager eventually signed American Brad Friedel.

When Gerard Houllier took sole charge at Anfield, the writing was on the wall for James and he was sold to Aston Villa in 1999 with Sander Westerveld arriving as the new Anfield Number one.

簡介﹕
Tommy came through the Junior ranks at Anfield and signed professional forms for the club in October 1957 when he was 17 years old but had to wait 5 years before finally forcing his way into the first-team by replacing Jim Furnell a third of the way into the 1962-63 season. Lawrence played in goal for the last 29 matches of Liverpool's first year back in the First Division after an 8-year absence and would then miss only another four League fixtures over the next six seasons, being an 'ever-present' on three separate occasions.

He won a championship medal in his first full season between the posts (1963-64) - a feat he repeated two years later - and was also a member of the Liverpool side which finally brought the F.A. cup home to Anfield for the first time in the club's history. He was awarded a Scottish cap early in his career but rather surprisingly, considering he was a key member of such a successful club side, was only called on to represent his country (Scotland) on two further occasions. Sometimes criticised for being overweight, a fact which brought him the irreverent nickname of 'the Flying Pig', Tommy was a strong and brave 'keeper and one of the first to be used almost as a 'sweeper' by racing yards out of his goal to confront opposition forwards who had broken through on their own.

Ray Clemence had arrived from Scunthorpe and was being groomed as Tommy's successor but as the 1960's closed he was still very much Bill Shankly's first-choice between the posts. One miserable afternoon at Watford changed all that. Tommy might have done better with Barry Endean's header that sent the Reds skidding out of the F.A. cup quarter-final on February 21st 1970 but Shankly knew he could no longer rely on some the men who had served him so well during the middle of the previous decade. He had to plan for the club's future and when the team ran out at Anfield a week later against Derby County it was Ray Clemence who was wearing the jersey with No. 1 on its back. Tommy never played for Liverpool's first-team again and moved across the Mersey to join Tranmere Rovers in September 1971.

He was soon joined there by his old skipper Ron Yeats, who became manager at Prenton Park in April of the following year. Tommy played 80 times in the Football League for Tranmere but it is the 300+ times he represented Liverpool in First Division games for which he will be most remembered, including one year when the club finished runners-up to Leeds (1969) when he was beaten only 24 times during the whole League season, in which he played in every one of the 42 games.

簡介﹕
Gary Ablett was equally comfortable playing at left back or centre half and won his fair share of medals at Anfield.

Ablett was given his chance by Kenny Dalglish and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at Charlton in December 1986, when he replaced the injured Alan Hansen. On his second appearance, and Anfield debut, he scored a magnificent goal in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in April 1987, and followed it up with another fine display in a 3-1 win over Everton at Anfield.

In the glorious title winning season of 1987-88 Ablett played the second part of the season at left back and did well, ably assisted by John Barnes, while the following season he only missed three games, covering for the injured Gary Gillespie and Hansen at centre half. In 1989 he won an FA Cup winners medal against Everton.

Although he had the occasional lapse in concentration, Ablett continued to impress when called upon and he was a firm favourite under Dalglish's reign as manager.

It was during the managerial reign of Graeme Souness that Ablett lost his place to Nicky Tanner and was sold across Stanley Park to Everton for ?50,000 in January 1992 to link up with former Red hero Peter Beardsley.

Further moves followed to Birmingham City and then Blackpool under Steve McMahon.

簡介﹕
Phil Babb began his career with Millwall and then made the move north to sign for Bradford City where he played as a midfielder and scored fourteen goals in eighty league appearances.

His move to Coventry City gave him the chance to prove his worth in the top flight and his progress was such that both Liverpool and Tottenham were keen to lure him away from Highfield Road. It was largely due to his performances in the 1994 World Cup in America for Ireland which persuaded then manager Roy Evans to splash out a record transfer fee for a defender to secure his services. Evans paid Coventry City ?.6 million for the Irish defender - and days later beat his own record by signing John Scales from Wimbledon.

Babb went on to play over one hundred and fifty matches for Liverpool, facing a fight for a place in the team in the 1 999/2000 season with several players competing for two central defensive slots. Good in the air and quick on the ground, Babb had been a regular in the Liverpool side during the Roy Evans days, but the 1998/99 season was a disappointing one as he missed large chunks of it through either injury or loss of form. In the Summer of 1999 G廨ard Houllier declared Babb free to leave Anfield if he so desired, whilst suggesting that while he remains at Anfield he could still have a large part to play in the club's future.

In January 2000, Babb was loaned out to Tranmere Rovers for a month and in the summer of 2000 he was released and is now with Sporting Lisbon.

簡介﹕
Stig Bjornebye's Anfield debut ended in a 5-1 defeat by Coventry City but thankfully things were to get better during his Liverpool career. It was a difficult start for the young left back, signed in 1992, and he only made occasional appearances during his opening months on Merseyside. In fact, at the end of season 1993-94 he was even loaned back to his former club Rosenborg.

Bjornebye finally displaced Julian Dicks in the team at the beginning of season 1994-95 and soon made the position his own. He played in the club's 1995 Coca-Cola Cup success at Wembley but joy soon turned to despair as he broke a leg a few days later in a match with Southampton at Anfield. The injury sidelined him for several months and he managed just two appearances throughout the following season as Jason McAteer and Rob Jones were the regular full backs.

Bjornebye's fortunes soon changed and he even managed to score the first goal of the Premiership on the opening day of the 1996-97 season when he netted after five minutes at Middlesbrough.

At international level he subsequently announced his retirement leaving behind many happy memories including being involved in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and also playing a major role in Norway's improved standing in world football.

Bjornebye has proved on a couple of occasions in his Anfield career that he is capable of breaking back into the first team after spending time frustrated on the sidelines. The start of the 1999/2000 season saws him battling with Dominic Matteo and Steve Staunton for the left back berth at Anfield and once more struggling to break into the first team, though he captained the reserves with distinction before becoming injured.

In March 2000 Stig joined Danish side Brondby on loan and then in the summer of 2000 he was transferred to Blackburn Rovers.

A Scotland international from Lanarkshire, Busby joined Liverpool for ?,000 from Manchester City in March 1936 and was made captain. The hero of Liverpool's first FA Cup triumph when he played for 117 minutes of the extra-time contest against Leeds at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins.

The player, his team-mates, manager Bill Shankly and right hand man and physio Bob Paisley kept Byrne's injury a secret from Leeds. Not only did Byrne complete the match and the half-hour extra period but also supplied the cross for Roger Hunt to score the first Liverpool goal in their 2-1 win.

"Gerry's collar bone was split and grinding together yet he played on in agony", said Shankly. "It was a performance of raw courage from the boy". Liverpool-born Byrne joined his home-town club as an amateur and signed professional in 1955. He had been put up for sale when Shankly arrived in December 1959 and one of the new manager's first acts was to remove him from the transfer list.

At home on either full back flank he settled down on the left partnered on the right by Chris Lawler. A solid tackler he was an ever present in the Second Division title winning side in 1962, won League Championship medals in 1964 and 1966 and collected two England caps before retiring through injury in 1969.

簡介﹕
Roy Evans' love affair with Liverpool began at the age of seven when he attended his first game at Anfield. As he grew older he went on to play at left-back for England schoolboys in 1963 before joining Liverpool as an apprentice two years later.

He made his full debut in 1969, playing 3 games in the 1969/70 season, and played occasionally at left-back for Liverpool during the seasons 1969/70 to 1973/74, but following Shankly's shock resignation in 1974 Bob Paisley persuaded him, at the age of 25, to direct his talents into coaching, and he became the youngest member of the famous 'Boot Room'. John Smith, the Chairman at the time, predicted: "We have not made an appointment for the present but for the future. One day Roy Evans will be our manager."

Appointed Reserve Team Coach, Roy won the Central League Championship in his first season, 1975, and went on to win it seven times in nine years, before Joe Fagan took over as manager from the retiring Paisley, and appointed him to the senior coaching staff, where he played a part in Liverpool's great triumphs under Fagan, including the Treble of 1983/84, and subsequently under Dalglish, including the Double of 1985/86.

After Dalglish had stunned everyone by resigning in 1991, Graeme Souness was brought in as manager. Evans was appointed Souness's assistant in 1993. Roy eventually became the Liverpool Manager in 1993/94 following the departure of Graeme Souness, and quickly returned a calming influence to the Club - chairman David Moores described him as: "The last of the Shankly lads". Evans was popular choice, and gave a great boost to the Club.

However he too struggled with worryingly lack-lustre displays from his players and the abysmal F A Cup appearance in 1996 against

Manchester United and their ill-advised Armarni suits, led to the damaging 'Spice Boy' tag being applied to his leading players.

This was a defining moment in retrospect as an F A Cup win would have given Evans an invaluable lift. As it was, despite winning the League Cup in 1994/95 and never finishing below 4th in the League after the season when he first took over, Roy was unable to deliver another cup or the League Championship which the Club and its fans demanded.

His transfer deals were only qualified successes, but his support and development of the likes of Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Michael Owen in particular, stand as proof that he knew how to develop local talent. Evans to his credit reacted positively to the unusual decision to bring in a joint manager - G廨ard Houllier - to share the burden at the start of the 1998/99 season, and they did their best to make the partnership work.

The arrangement, however, was not a success, and Roy and the Club decided by mutual agreement that he would leave, making the sad announcement on 12th November 1998.

簡介﹕
The Bonnybridge-born Scotland centre back became the youngest captain in world professional football when he skippered his local club Falkirk at the tender age of 17 and Coventry paid £75,000 to sign him in 1978 before his 18th birthday.

When Joe Fagan succeeded Bob Paisley as Liverpool manager in the summer of 1983 he made Gillespie his first transfer capture at a cost of £325,000. There were two massive obstacles blocking his path to regular first team football: those magnificent defenders Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson. He was also hit by a string of injuries.

In his first season at Anfield, when Liverpool scooped the first treble in English football history by landing the League, European Cup and League Cup, Gillespie made just a single senior appearance and 22 the following season.

But the cultured defender had 24 outings in Liverpool's League and FA Cup double-winning season of 1985-86 under Kenny Dalglish and also figured in the championship campaigns of 1987-88 (playing in 35 of the 40 games) and 1990. After Graeme Souness' arrival as manager Gillespie moved to his boyhood favourites Celtic for £925,000 in 1991, later re-joining Coventry.

簡介﹕
Rated by many to be the most skilful centre half in the history of British football his game oozed elegance. The graceful Scotland international was a gifted player tailor-made for Liverpool's mid 1970's tactical development of building more patiently from the back, which brought them such huge success in England and Europe.

His control and vision was as effective in creating Liverpool attacks as in stopping the opposition's and his aptitude was underlined by his multi-sport prowess which also embraced international recognition at basketball, volleyball, squash and golf, a game at which he still excels.

Hansen, who captained Liverpool to the League and FA Cup double in 1986 under the management of his close friend Kenny Dalglish, was one of Bob Paisley's most inspired signings. He cost £100,000 from Partick Thistle in May 1977 and within 18 months had made the No 6 shirt his own.

His first great central defensive partnership was alongside Phil Thompson and in the 1980's Hansen formed a magnificent combination with Mark Lawrenson. When he retired through injury in 1991, a week after Dalglish's resignation as manager, he had collected three European Cup and eight title medals in his amazing harvest of honours. He is now a celebrated BBC football pundit.

簡介﹕
Kenny Dalglish signed stylish Swedish international centre half Glenn Hysen from under the noses of Manchester United in 1989.

The centre half, who arrived from Fiorentina for just ?25,000, had established quite a reputation, especially with his recent performance for Sweden against England and United desperately wanted to sign him. However, Dalglish quickly pounced to make him a Liverpool player.

Hysen made his Reds debut in the 1989 Charity Shield win over Arsenal at Wembley and gave an outstanding performance as the Reds fans quickly warmed to him. Strong in the air and strong in the tackle he was the perfect foil for Alan Hansen.

The silver-haired Hysen scored his first Liverpool goal at Anfield in the 9-0 destruction of Crystal Palace and went on to produce outstanding performances as Liverpool won the League Championship.

The following season was something of a struggle for Hysen. With Hansen ruled out for the whole season through injury, Hysen, skipper in Jockey's absence, found the burden tough and he was being caught out for pace. One example of that came in the extraordinary 4-4 draw with Everton.

Shortly after Graeme Souness took over the Anfield helm Hysen was allowed to leave the club, but not before he made a return to the team for a brief renaissance in the 1991-92 season. On leaving Liverpool he returned to Sweden.

簡介﹕
Graeme Souness' reign as Liverpool manager was severely criticised but let it be said that he did sign right back Rob Jones for a bargain ?00,000 from Crewe Alexandra in 1991.

Making his Reds debut at Old Trafford of all places, Jones performance against Manchester United is still to this day remembered by Liverpool supporters. Nothing significant in the actual game you might say as it finished 0-0 but his marking of Ryan Giggs was simply magnificent as the Welsh international hardly got a kick. Indeed Giggs was full of praise for the Reds defender by rating him as his most difficult opponent. High praise indeed.

Jones went on to finish a highly impressive first season by playing in the 1992 FA Cup victory over Sunderland at Wembley. International honours followed with England and he made a superb debut in the 2-0 win over France at Wembley.

However, there was injury heartbreak for Jones when he was forced to pull out of Graham Taylor's squad for the 1992 European Championships. It was a huge loss for the player and for the England team.

Over the next few years Jones established himself as the best right back in England with a series of energetic and powerful display's down the right, linking brilliantly with Steve McManaman, and it came something of a big surprise when he was left out of the England team for the vital World Cup qualifier with Holland in 1993, which England lost in controversial circumstances.

When new manager Roy Evans introduced the wing back system Jones filled it perfectly and added another medal to his collection when he played in the 1995 Coca Cola League Cup win over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley.

The following season Evans signed Jason McAteer from Bolton and he took the right wing back role with Jones switched to the left. It was a role Jones disliked but such was his professionalism he got on with the job without making a fuss.

Sadly injury then set in with back problems that restricted his appearances to just three in the 1996-97 season. He was released in May 1999 and tried his luck at West Ham United but his back problems continued to be a major problem and he was forced to retire from the game.

簡介﹕
The charismatic Welshman became a 'cult figure' on the Kop after his transfer from Wrexham, even though he only actually played for Liverpool徭uring three different seasons. Joey was an enthustiastic and tough-tackling left-back whose uncompromising style quickly endeared him to the Liverpool crowd.

He was 20 years old when Bob Paisley signed him in the summer of 1975 and still a bit 'raw', which愩erhaps explained why - even though he started the season in the first-team - he only appeared in 13 First Division matches, one short agonisingly of the number required to qualify for a championship medal. The left-back role was also covered by Phil Neal & Alec Lindsay (briefly) in 1975-76 but a year later Joey had established himself in the first-team and only missed 3 of the 42 League fixtures. 1976-77 was his and Liverpool's greatest year of the decade; only Manchester United's victory in the F.A. cup final prevented it from being the greatest-EVER season in the club's history.

But Joey was a member of the side that finally brought the European cup back to Anfield after their memorable triumph in Rome. Midway through the next season, Joey lost his place to the ageing but still dependable Tommy Smith and then subsequently to a young Alan Hansen. It was clear that his time at Anfield was drawing to廇 close. He eventually rejoined Wrexham and later had spells at Chelsea and Huddersfield, where he was just as popular with the supporters as he had been on Merseyside.

Joey finally returned to his first club for a second time before the 1987-88 season and when his playing career finally ended, he continued to work at The Racecourse Ground as a coach with the same enthusiasm that he had always displayed as a player. Joey was 'capped' over 70 times by his country and even though he figured in less than a hundred first-team games for Liverpool, he is still fondly remembered by the fans as one of the most colourful characters ever to pull on the famous red shirt.

簡介﹕
Alan had been a 19 year old full-back for Newcastle United on the day that Liverpool destroyed his F.A. cup final hopes in 1974 by outplaying the Geordies 3-0 at Wembley. He didn't know it at the time but although he never would collect a winners' medal in the F.A. cup, he would win more trophies than he could ever have dreamed possible after his transfer from the North-East to Merseyside just before the start of the 1978-79 season.

The left-back had been a bit of a 'problem-area' for Liverpool in 1977-78 with Joey Jones, Tommy Smith & Alan Hansen all wearing the No. 3 shirt at some stage of that season. But Alan stepped confidently into their shoes and played 37 League games in each of his first two seasons at Anfield, winning League championship medals on both occasions. Alan missed much of the 1980-81 season through injury but still contributed two priceless goals from full-back to keep the club's run of success going on into the 80's. His extra-time goal narrowly failed to beat West Ham in the League cup final at Wembley but he was a member of the team that beat the Hammers in the Aston Villa replay 18 days later.

Then on an unforgettable night in Paris eight weeks after that his blistering cross-shot fizzed past the Real Madrid 'keeper in a blur to bring the European cup to Anfield for the 3rd time in 5 seasons. His astonishing record of scoring in big games continued as he struck a second-half equaliser against Manchester United in the 1983 League cup final and then a year later came the most dramatic moment of all, the decisive penalty-kick in the shoot-out that followed the 1-1 draw with the Italian champions from Rome, who had been given the extremely unfair advantage of playing the European cup final at their own stadium.

Kennedy still played in most of the following season's First Division fixtures but by the end of the season his place had been taken by Jim Beglin. He did play in the opening 8 League matches of the 1985-86 season but a comical own-goal in the last of those games (at Oxford) may have been the final straw for the new player-manager, Kenny Dalglish. Alan never played for the club again and Phil Neal, his full-back partner for so long and with whom he had enjoyed so much success, would only last a few more games before he too was replaced (by Steve Nicol).

Alan had a brief spell in Belgium and also with Hartlepool and Wrexham in the lower divisions of the Football League before continuing to play non-League football until he had passed his 40th birthday. He was a popular player who made nearly 250 First Division appearances for Liverpool to add to the 150+ he had played at Newcastle and he also reached the remarkable total of exactly 100 cup games for Liverpool, a testimony to the club's domination of the time and the long cup runs which so often ended with success in the final.

簡介﹕
Norwegian centre half Bjorn Tore Kvarme arrived at the club as a replacement for the popular John Scales in January 1997.

After selling Scales to Spurs for a fee of around £2.5 million, Roy Evans looked to have completed a shrewd piece of business by bringing in Kvarme on a Bosman transfer. Kvarme had impressed the Reds coaching staff while training with the club during a visit to Merseyside to see his close friend, Stig Inge Bjornebye.

The early signs were encouraging. He made his debut at Anfield on the right side of a three man central defensive formation, and did exceptionally well in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa. He gave an outstanding display at Highbury during a 2-1 win over Arsenal that had Liverpool fans thinking 'what a good signing this Kvarme was.' Sadly, however, it all started to go wrong for the Norwegian when he was caught in possession during a Merseyside derby at Goodison. Being robbed of the ball by Danny Cadamarteri, the Everton striker went on to turn Neil Ruddock inside out before scoring.

To make things worse, a couple of weeks later he made a carbon copy error at Anfield which allowed Andy Cole, to also score and set United up for a 3-1 victory. He never recovered from those two grave errors.

Committing two such vital mistakes against the reds' two main rivals destroyed Kvarme's confidence, and he was never the same player after that. When Roy Evans scrapped the wing back system to play 4-4-2, there was some hope for the Norwegian that he may be able to make the right back spot his own, but he couldn't displace Jason McAteer and Norwegian compatriot Vegard Heggem, and Gerard Houllier sold him to St Etienne in 1999.

簡介﹕
Mark was one of manager Bob Paisley's most astute signings, a classy defender with over 200 Football League games under his belt for his home-town club Preston North End and then later Brighton & Hove Albion, from whom Liverpool bought him for ?00,000 just before the start of the 1981-82 season. He went straight into the team and made his debut at Wolverhampton on 29th August 1981 and figured in 39 of the 42 games that would lead to him winning the first of the five championship medals he would gain during his time at Anfield.

It was an unlikely championship too with many changes in personnel to the squad which had become champions of Europe the previous Spring. Lying mid-table after a depressing home defeat by Manchester City on Boxing Day, the team won 13 and drew 3 of its last 16 games and Mark's towering header past former Anfield favourite Ray Clemence in the penultimate fixture of the season equalised Glenn Hoddle's first-half strike before he hooked the ball over his head just 4 minutes later to lay on a goal for Kenny Dalglish. Ronnie Whelan's late volley ensured that Liverpool could not be caught in the race for the championship. It was the first of three successive League titles for the club and Mark only missed 5 of the 126 fixtures that brought about that remarkable achievment.

He also won 3 successive medals in the League cup and showed his usual composure in the intimidating atmosphere of the Olympic stadium in Rome when the Italian champions were held to a 1-1 draw in the European cup final before Alan Kennedy won the resulting penalty shoot-out. Mark was also a key member of the 'Double' squad in 1986, although perhaps fortunate to play in the F.A. cup final against Everton. He had been injured against Oxford towards the end of March and missed 4 crucial games of the championship run-in, although Kenny Dalglish did recall him for the last 4 League matches but only two of them were from the start. However, Gary Gillespie's late withdrawal from the Wembley squad due to injury made the player-manager's selection headache a lot easier and Lawrenson did finally add an F.A. cup winners' medal to all his other honours.

Capped numerous times by his 'adopted' country (the Republic or Ireland), Mark started the 1987-88 season at the age of 30 with seemingly several years of good football still ahead of him. But forced to leave the field through injury against Arsenal in the middle of January 1988, he was never able recover the fitness he needed to continue playing at the top level and reluctantly but wisely announced that his playing career was over. After a brief and unhappy spell as manager of Oxford United, Mark was away from the football scene for a while but later used his considerable knowledge and experience to become a respected journalist and member of the BBC's "Match of the Day" team.

簡介﹕
Spotted by then reserve team manager Phil Thompson playing for Kirkby Town, Mike Marsh was a Liverpool player waiting to be noticed.

A lifelong Liverpudlian Marsh had all the attributes needed to be a top class Reds star. He was an outstanding passer of the ball and possessed skill in abundance.

After impressing in the reserves he was given his debut by Kenny Dalglish and came on as a second half substitute in the 2-0 Anfield victory over Charlton Athletic in March 1989. His full debut finally arrived in the last game of the 1990-91 season when he was given the number seven jersey by Graeme Souness in the 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Season 1991-92 was the one when Marsh made his breakthrough with 18 league starts in a midfield role and was handed a place on the bench for the 1992 FA Cup Final win over Sunderland, but didn't get on.

He did score a memorable goal in the dramatic UEFA Cup comeback victory over Auxerre at Anfield when Liverpool overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. However, Marsh was also used by Souness in a right back role that didn't suit his talents and he wasn't comfortable in that position.

Despite his obvious quality, Marsh couldn't hold down a regular place in his favoured central midfield role and was sold by Souness along with David Burrows to West Ham United in 1993 in a swap deal for Julian Dicks.

Despite starting well at Upton Park, Marsh couldn't settle in London and then after spells at Coventry City and under Souness again with Galatasary, he linked up with Reds legend Ronnie Whelan at Southend United.

After a good spell at Roots Hall Marsh was forced to retire from the professional game due to a knee injury, but he did make comebacks at non-league level under former Reds Jan Molby at Kidderminster Harriers then under Mark Wright at Southport.

簡介﹕
Dominic Matteo was born in Scotland with English parents and Italian grandparents. He was first spotted by Liverpool scouts when playing for Birkdale United and he took the eye of Kenny Dalglish while he was watching his son Paul in action. Matteo joined Liverpool's School of Excellence with another eleven year old - Robbie Fowler.

He made his Liverpool debut at Manchester City in October 1993 where he played on the left of midfield. Over the next couple of seasons he played in a variety of roles including left back, centre back and also in the midfield. He didn't have a set position in the side as the Liverpool staff went about working out which position would suit him best.

He started the 1995-96 season as a sweeper and excelled to the extent that he was handed his first international call up for England. Unfortunately his subsequent England call-ups coincided with injury problems and in the following seasons he was unable to make the impact on the international stage that many felt his talent deserving of.

Gerard Houllier saw him as a left back in his Liverpool restructuring plans, issuing a firm 'hands off' warning to any club thinking of launching a bid for his talented defender. The 1999/2000 season promises to be vital for Matteo in terms of establishing himself as a regular in the side, and a good end to the 1998/99 season along with an encouraging start to the following campaign suggested that, after a number of years on the fringes of the Liverpool team, he had finally made the big breakthrough and was in the side to stay. However, with Houllier opting for the experience of Staunton at left back, Dominic was once more faced with a fight to re-establish himself.

Roy Evans had been impressed with McAteer's performances during his Bolton days, especially during the 1995 Coca Coca Cup Final at Wembley when his energetic midfield display caught the eye.

However, when he arrived at Anfield Evans played him as a right sided wing back switching Rob Jones to left back, due to the midfield pairing of Jamie Redknapp and John Barnes.

The role worked well in the early days with McAteer forging a good partnership down the right with Steve McManaman. He was energetic and could get up and down the line well supporting the attack.

He suffered from inconsistency with his crosses, with the 1996 FA Cup Final against Manchester United being a prime example, in what was a major disappointing day for Liverpool, white suits and all.

McAteer continued to be an integral part of Roy Evans team but the writing was on the wall for him once Gerard Houllier came to Anfield. His final game for Liverpool was a substitute appearance, ironically in his favoured central midfield role as a replacement for Paul Ince, in the ill fated 2-1 FA Cup fourth round defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

McAteer helped Blackburn back into the Premiership in 2001 before joining Sunderland in October 2001.

簡介﹕
One of the most versatile players in Liverpool history, Scotland international Nicol could fill any role in defence or midfield with equal skill and dexterity. His value as a utility man was incalculable and the £300,000 Bob Paisley paid Ayr United to bring him to Anfield in October 1981 proved one of the bargain deals of all time.

He made his senior debut in August 1982 but had to wait until 1983-84 under new boss Joe Fagan for a sustained run in the side. He ended that campaign with a League title and European Cup winners medal, the latter gained despite his spot kick failure in the penalty shoot-out with Roma.

At size 11, Nicol's feet were among the biggest in football and his boots were a full size bigger than any other in the Liverpool squad of that era. But the talent within them was underlined by his election as Footballer of the Year in 1989 by the nation's soccer writers.

Nicol played for five Liverpool managers - Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Roy Evans were the others - and made 466 appearances, scoring 46 goals. Overall he won four League titles and three FA Cup winners medals before becoming a player coach at Notts County in 1995. He later played for Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster before becoming caretaker coach of American club New England Revolution, and then head coach of Boston Bulldogs.

簡介﹕
Assistant manager Phil Thompson won everything in the game as a player and now he is hoping to help the modern day Liverpool team repeat his triumphs of years ago.

Appointed as number two to Gerard Houllier when the Frenchman was named as sole manager Thompson arrived back at the club from which he left some years earlier after a spell as reserve manager.

Having won seven league titles, 2 European Cups, two League Cups, a UEFA Cup and an FA Cup during his playing career Thompson understands the Liverpool history and so is seen by many fans as the man to help bring the glory days back to Anfield. His coaching career began with the Liverpool reserve team in the early nineties, but when that came to an end there then followed a period of time when his only involvement in the game was through his highly successful media work. He jumped at the chance to once again work at the club he loves so much, although he scoffed at suggestions on his appointment that he would be 'too nice' for the job.

He said: 'People may look at me and say 'hey, nice guy', but they don't know the other side of me. I will do whatever is necessary to help this club be successful again. I know we have the players to do it and I know we can do it, but we have to pull together and all work for the same thing. I have good credentials in the coaching side of the game and I hope I can put them to good use again with Liverpool.'

簡介﹕
Graeme Souness signed hard man Neil 'Razor' Ruddock from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 1993 for £2.5 million to add steel to the defence.

Souness saw him as the ideal partner for Mark Wright but it didn't quite work out like that. He already had a reputation as a hard man and his Anfield debut in a Red shirt was controversial to say the least. In Ronnie Whelan's testimonial a clash with former Red hero Peter Beardsley now playing for Newcastle, left the striker with a fractured cheekbone.

Ruddock made his Liverpool debut against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield and set up one of the goals in a 2-0 win for Nigel Clough, then followed that up in his third game by scoring his first goal against Swindon Town.

His best moment from the 1993-94 season was scoring an equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Manchester United at Anfield, with a thumping header past Peter Schmeichel. In fact he did not know he had scored. After the game it transpired Ruddock was suffering from concussion and only realised afterwards what that goal had meant!

When Roy Evans took charge at Anfield, he used a different defensive formula with Ruddock playing as one of three centre halves and he looked more comfortable in this role.

He played his part in the club winning the Coca Cola Cup, when he played in the 2-1 win against Bolton Wanderers at Wembley.

However the following season he experienced what he called 'his worst moment in football,' when Roy Evans left him out of the FA Cup Final squad to face Manchester United at Wembley. His replacement was Phil Babb and Liverpool lost 1-0. They badly missed Razor's steel and fighting spirit and Evans later admitted he had made a mistake.

Fighting fit and raring to go at the start of the 1996-97 season disaster struck for Ruddock when he injured his groin just before the big kick-off against Middlesbrough and the remainder of his career at Anfield was to be blighted by niggling injuries.

Ruddock's final game for Liverpool was a disappointing affair as Liverpool lost 3-0 to Strasbourg in the UEFA Cup.

He then moved to West Ham United before a spell with Crystal Palace. Ruddock is now player-coach assisting Roy Evans at Swindon Town.

簡介﹕
Steve Staunton bid a fond farewell to Liverpool when he rejoined Premiership side Aston Villa on December 8th, 2000 on a free transfer.

The Republic of Ireland international who originally left Anfield for Villa Park back in 1991 rejoined the Reds for a second spell in 1998. In total Staunton made 147 appearances for Liverpool, scoring six goals.

Staunton was first signed for the Reds in 1986 by Kenny Dalglish from Irish side Dundalk, and made his first appearance in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham at Anfield in 1988. He made his international debut the following month and became first choice left back for the remainder of the season, playing in the 3-2 1989 FA Cup victory over Everton at Wembley. Staunton was also in the title winning side of 1990 before being sold in the summer of 1991 by Graeme Souness to Aston Villa for more than £1 million. He picked up a League Cup winners medal with Villa before rejoining Liverpool on a free transfer under the Bosman Ruling.

Staunton had previously made one appearance for the first team in the 2000-2001 season as a substitute in the 3-3 draw against Southampton at the Dell, and had been told by Liverpool he could leave on a free transfer.

He then went to Selhurst Park to join First Division Crystal Palace on a month’s loan before he was recalled by Liverpool to join the squad for their UEFA Cup tie in Olympiakos on November 23rd, 2000 – his last appearance for Liverpool.

He made an impressive appearance as a second half substitute for Djimi Traore in Athens, and almost marked his comeback with a goal when he hit the bar with a curled free-kick. He was then scheduled to make a comeback for the first team against Newcastle at St James’ Park but suffered a hamstring injury in training, before he completed the move back to Aston Villa.

簡介﹕
It was literally a red-letter day for Venison when he joined Liverpool from Sunderland in July 1986 for £250,000. The full back wrote to every club in the old First Division informing them that his Roker contract had ended and asking if they were interested in signing him.

When Kenny Dalglish replied inviting him to Liverpool, he jumped at the chance. Former England Youth and Under 21 skipper Venison had already earned himself a place in the record books by becoming the youngest ever Wembley Cup Final captain. He led Sunderland against Norwich City in the 1985 Milk Cup Final at the tender age of 20 years 220 days.

Wembley was also the venue for his competitive debut, a 1-1 Charity Shield draw with Everton on his 22nd Birthday. His Anfield career was hampered by injury but in 158 appearances he won two League championships and an F A Cup winners medal.

Venison returned to his native North East to rejoin Newcastle for £250,000 in 1992 and two years later, at the age of 30 and playing in midfield, he won the first of two England caps. He later joined Galatasaray and Southampton before becoming a television football pundit.

簡介﹕
Stylish England international Mark Wright was signed by Graeme Souness from Derby County for ?.2 million in the summer of 1991, and was soon joined at Anfield by Rams team-mate Dean Saunders.

With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysen soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, Liverpool were desperate for a centre half of quality, and after his courageous display's for England in the 1990 World Cup Wright fitted the bill perfectly.

Having made his Reds debut in the 2-1 win over Oldham Athletic at Anfield in August 1991, disaster came in his second game when he limped off after an hour in the 2-1 defeat by Manchester City at Maine Road. This was to be the start of many niggling injuries in his first season at Anfield but he did bounce back in style.

With Ronnie Whelan injured, Souness made Wright captain and his proudest moment came when he lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 after Liverpool defeated Sunderland 2-0.

However, that high was followed by a series of despairing lows with loss of form and injury problems set in. Wright lost the captaincy the following season and lost his place to the Dane Torben Piechnik.

More problems arose when Souness left Anfield and Roy Evans took sole charge. In the summer of 1994 Wright, along with Julian Dicks were relegated to the reserves after a 4-1 pre-season defeat at Bolton with Evans criticising the pair for attitude problems.

When Evans then signed John Scales and Phil Babb the writing looked to be on the wall for Wright but you can't keep a good man down and, in true three lions bravery, the England star bounced back to the team.

An Achilles problem and a knot of scar tissue higher up his leg was restricting Wright's progress and in a move of desperation he turned to blind physiotherapist Norman Collins for treatment. Collins was well known in the business for quick recovery and sure enough sorted out Wright's problem and the player was back in training.

Free of injury Wright worked harder than ever and was rewarded with a first team recall as a replacement for the injured Scales in March 1995 against Manchester United at Anfield. His performance that day signalled that Wright was back in business and a man of the match display saw Liverpool beat their fierce rivals 2-0.

Although he wasn't included in the 13 for the Coca Cola Cup win at Wembley in 1995, Wright was back the following season and with Scales moving to Tottenham he was back in his favoured position in a back three, playing 41 matches in the campaign.

A good leader and talker at the back, Wright was comfortable at bringing the ball out of defence and setting up attacks. He also chipped in with some memorable goals including a blistering drive against Queens Park Rangers in February 1996, and a header that gave the Reds brief hope against Paris St Germain in the European Cup Winners' Cup semi-final defeat.

Wright left Anfield in 1998 after retiring due to injury and pursued a career in management. His first post arrived fairly locally as manager of Conference side Southport for the 2000-2001 season and he did a fine job, steering the Haig Avenue outfit to a finishing position in the top five.

However, following a disagreement with the Southport chairman of whether the club should go professional or not Wright left, but was quickly back in football being appointed manager of his old club Oxford United.

簡介﹕
Born in Berlin, Christian Ziege actually started his career as a goalkeeper. It was only after spells with his local clubs Sudstern 08, TSVRudow and Hertha Zehlendorf that he became an outfield player, and his impressive form during the early years of his career in Germany saw him snapped up by the mighty Bayern Munich while still only 18.

Christian represented Germany at every level as a youth and was hailed by the press as the "new Andy Brehme" when he captained the under-21 team.

He made his senior debut for Germany against Brazil in the 1993 US Cup and played a starring role for the triumphant Germany side at Euro '96, playing every minute of every game and scoring the team's first goal in their opening game against the Czech Republic.

That year he also helped Bayern win the UEFA Cup. After an unhappy spell in Italy with AC Milan, Ziege was delighted to join Middlesbrough, who paid ? million for his services. He revived his career on Teeside and duly returned to the national side, scoring a brilliant hat-trick against Northern Ireland in his second game back and going on to win his 50th cap in Germany's final warm-up match before Euro 2000, where he played the first two games against Romania and England.

In the summer of 2000, Ziege swapped Teeside for Merseyside. His ?.5 million transfer was a long, drawn out affair and following his arrival he struggled to hold down a regular place in the first team.

Probably his best game in a Red shirt came in the UEFA Cup quarter final in Italy away to Roma, when his superb cross saw Michael Owen score his second goal of the game to give the Reds a priceless 2-0 win. He made a substitute appearance in the Worthington Cup Final against Birmingham and scored one of the penalties in the shoot-out victory.

Frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities and the emergence of Gregory Vignal saw Ziege move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2001.

簡介﹕
Local lad Phil Boersma spent the majority of his time at Anfield having to settle for the role of substitute and stand-in striker due to the intense competition for places.

Just look at the forward line he had to compete with for a starting place in the form of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack!

He did make an appearance as substitute in the 1973 UEFA Cup victory over Borrusia Monchengladbach though when he came on for Steve Heighway and although he missed out on the 1974 FA Cup Final against Newcastle he did play at Wembley in the Charity Shield against Leeds three months later.

Frustrated by his lack of first team opportunities Boersma left Anfield to join Middlesbrough in December 1975.

A good friend of Graeme Souness, Boersma returned to Anfield with Souness in 1990 and became physiotherapist and first team coach. He left when Souness resigned as Reds boss and then occupied similar roles with the former Liverpool boss at Southampton, Benfica, Galatasary and then at Blackburn Rovers.

簡介﹕
Locally born, Tom Bromilow asked Liverpool for a trial and two years later was an England international.

The First World War was nearing its end when Bromilow tentatively enquired about the possibility of a trial. His request was granted and the rest, as they say his history.

The youngster was pitched into the first team at left half and impressed immediately.

A fine tackler whose distribution was also one of his major assets Bromilow established himself as a regular member of the team and missed just two games in each of the club's successive title-winning season's in the early twenties.

International recognition deservedly came his way and he won the first of five caps against Wales in 1921. Although the remainder of the decade brought little in terms of success at Anfield Bromilow continued to serve the club with loyalty and distinction and was an ever-present in the 1927/28 season.

After hanging up his boots he went to coach in Amsterdam before returning to England and embarking on a managerial career with Burnley, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

He died suddenly on a train on March 4 1959, while scouting for Leicester City, on his way home from a cup-tie between Wrexham and Merthyr Tydfil.

簡介﹕
Liverpool's own marathon man - the club's appearance record holder with 856 senior outings spanning almost two decades. Liverpool-born Callaghan was the only player to appear for the club in the old Second Division right through to their first European Cup triumph in Rome in 1977. He was at the club as a junior when Bill Shankly arrived in 1959 and still playing when the legendary Scot left in 1974.

Like his boyhood hero Billy Liddell - ironically the man he replaced on his debut in April 1960 - Callaghan was a gentleman of the game. He was booked only once in a remarkable career which brought him a cascade of medals and an MBE.

He was a direct, raiding right winger during the first phase of his career, embracing Liverpool's climb from the old Second Division, on to League and FA Cup glory and regular European campaigns before knee damage threatened his Anfield future in 1970.

But the evergreen Callaghan returned in a new, central midfield role, continuing impressively during the Bob Paisley management era. His crowning glory was a place, at 35, in the first European Cup-winning side. He joined Swansea in 1978, later played for Crewe and set an all-time record of 88 FA Cup appearances.

Israeli international Avi Cohen was signed by Bob Paisley from Maccabi Tel Aviv for ?00,000 in May 1979.

Cohen made his Reds debut at left back in September 1979 at Elland Road in 1-1 draw with Leeds United but continued to be on the verge of the first team and was mainly used as a covering player for injuries.

In the final game of the 1978-80 season Cohen was part of the Liverpool team that clinched the Championship against Aston Villa at Anfield. He had earlier scored an own goal in front of the Kop to give Villa an equaliser but in the second half made amends when he scored at the same end to put the Reds 2-1 up, and eventually clinch the title in style with a 4-1 win.

However, he didn't win a championship medal as he had only played four games that season. The following season Cohen found himself still behind Alan Kennedy in the pecking order for the left back slot and also faced competition from Richard Money, who was equally capable of covering at in that position.

He left Anfield after his contract was cancelled in November 1981 and he returned to Israel. He later moved on to play for Rangers under Graeme Souness in May 1987.

Inside right or centre forward Forshaw is the only man to win League championship medals with both Liverpool and Everton. The Preston-born player developed his talents in Gateshead junior football and after guesting for Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough during World War One joined Liverpool in 1919.

Standing a slim 5ft 10ins he formed a potent attacking alliance partnership with Harry Chambers and was an ever-present in Liverpool's consecutive championship seasons of 1921-22 and 1922-23, scoring 36 goals in the 84 games of those two campaigns.

But his highest scoring season was 1925-26 when he hit 29 goals in 35 League and FA Cup games, including a hat trick against Manchester United, a feat he repeated in the opening fixture of the following season.

After totaling 124 goals in 287 senior appearances Forshaw joined Everton in 1927 where he appeared in the same forward line as Dixie Dean and won another championship medal in the first season. He moved on to Wolves in 1929 and later played for Hednesford Town and Rhyl Athletic.

簡介﹕
He and Steve Heighway ushered in an academic 'first' for Liverpool when they appeared together as university graduates in the team that played Mansfield Town in a League Cup replay at Anfield in September 1970.

It was Bachelor of Science Hall's first senior start for the club and Bachelor of Arts Heighway's first team debut - and the Kop celebrated the occasion in typical apt and witty style by labeling the studious pair 'Big Bamber' and 'Little Bamber' after Bamber Gascoigne, who presented the popular TV show "University Challenge"!

Hall, at 5ft 6ins the smaller of the two, posed problems for defences with his flank runs and crosses and a terrier-like ability in midfield. His energy seemed boundless and the most famous of his 21 Liverpool goals was his first one. It was the winner in Liverpool's 2-1 FA Cup semi final defeat of Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971.

Glasgow-born, Preston-raised Hall left Liverpool for Plymouth in a ?5,000 move in 1976, having collected a batch of major medals. He later became a schoolmaster before returning to Anfield to become the club's public relations manager.

簡介﹕
Republic of Ireland international midfielder Ray Houghton was signed by Kenny Dalglish from Oxford United in October 1987 for £800,000, and he was to play a pivotal role in one of the best Reds sides to grace Anfield featuring a forward line of Peter Beardsley, John Barnes and John Aldridge.

Of the Houghton signing, player-manager Dalglish said: I’ve been interested in Ray for some time, and if you know what you want, the player is worth waiting for. Good players don’t come along too often, and when they do you have to try to sign them.”

After being given a free transfer by West Ham after just one appearance for the Hammers, Glasgow-born Houghton bounced back at Fulham in 1982. He then moved to Oxford in 1985 and played alongside John Aldridge. In his first season at the Manor Ground, Houghton scored at Wembley as Oxford won the Milk Cup Final at Wembley, beating Queens Park Rangers 3-0.

His international career took off too. Qualifying for the Republic of Ireland through his father, Houghton won the first of his 62 caps in a friendly against Wales in Dublin during March 1986.

The move to Anfield followed and Houghton made his Liverpool debut in a testimonial in Scotland for Dundee stalwart George McGeachie and scored in a 4-0 win. He made his full Reds debut the following Saturday on October 24th, 1997, on the plastic pitch at Kenilworth Road in Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Luton Town.

Houghton’s first goal for the Reds was in a 1-1 draw at Wimbledon. Coming on as a substitute for Craig Johnston, Houghton beat three defenders before slotting past Dave Beasant. Houghton then became a regular on the right of midfield and endeared himself to the Reds fans when he scored a superb header against Everton from a John Barnes cross, in the 1-0 FA Cup 5th Round win at Goodison Park.

He also scored in the famous 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Anfield on April 13th, 1988, as Liverpool went on to win the Division One Championship, but slipped up on a second double in the FA Cup Final against Wimbledon. Houghton ended his first season at Anfield with seven goals in 35 games.

At the end of the 1987-88 season Houghton was off to the European Championships in Germany, and scored with a header in a 1-0 win over an England side containing Anfield teammates John Barnes and Peter Beardsley.

Houghton’s first full season at Anfield was one of tragedy with the Hillsborough disaster claiming the lives of 96 Liverpool supporters. He played in the 1989 FA Cup win over Everton at Wembley only for the Reds to be denied a double again, this time by Arsenal in a dramatic last game at Anfield.

In his diary of the 1988-89 season, speaking about the disaster Houghton said: “I am not a Scouser but I felt I belonged. I always will now.”

The following season saw Liverpool regain the title but Houghton’s role was restricted with just 16 league appearances due to a back injury, but he still qualified for a Championship medal and was fit to play in the 1990 World Cup with the Republic of Ireland.

The 1990-91 season was the last for Kenny Dalglish as manager of Liverpool, and under Graeme Souness Houghton’s Liverpool career was coming to an end.

Houghton helped Liverpool to win the FA Cup, beating Sunderland 2-0 at Wembley in 1992 and was the Reds second top scorer behind Dean Saunders with 12 goals from 52 appearances.

Houghton won the Liverpool Player of the Year award and was in the top six for PFA Player of the Year for season 1991-92, his last at Anfield. However, the FA Cup Final was to be Houghton’s last in a red shirt, and the following season his number eight jersey went to Paul Stewart!

In a dispute over a pay increase, sadly the Reds Player of the Year Houghton was sold by Graeme Souness to Aston Villa in the summer of 1992 for £825,000.

Houghton is a player who will always be remembered by Liverpool fans as a workaholic who always gave 100 per cent. He could score goals, create goals and never gave defenders a moments peace, and will also be remembered as the final piece in the jig-saw for Kenny Dalglish’s wonderful 1987-88 championship winning side.

After life at Anfield, he went on to produce good performances for Villa, winning a League Cup winners medal in 1994, and played in the 1994 World Cup in the USA, where he scored in the opening 1-0 defeat of Italy. After a spell at Reading, Houghton is now coach at Crystal Palace.

簡介﹕
Midfielder Don Hutchison joined Liverpool in 1991 when Kenny Dalglish was impressed with a video performance of him playing for Hartlepool United, and paid £300,000 for the Geordie boy's services.

Hutchison was given his chance at Anfield by Graeme Souness in the 1991-92 season and made his league debut as a substitute against Notts County at Anfield in March 1992.

His best season was in 1992-93 when he scored 10 goals from midfield and made a big impression in a desperately disappointing season for Liverpool. Partnering another up and coming youngster Jamie Redknapp in midfield, those two carried the Liverpool team and complemented each other perfectly.

With Redknapp's passing skills, Hutchison added the drive, was a fierce competitor and could score goals.

For one reason or another season 1993-94 should have seen Hutchison make the midfield berth his own but it was another season of struggle for the Reds, and it was only in the final month of the season under new boss Roy Evans that 'Hutch' was back in favour.

One aspect worth noting is that he created Liverpool's last ever goal in front of the standing Kop, where he won a penalty against Ipswich Town which Julian Dicks scored.

Hutchison's days at Anfield were drawing to a close though in rather unfortunate circumstances. A much publicised incident in a city centre bar saw Hutchison sold by Roy Evans to West Ham in 1994 for £1.5 million.

Despite a good start with the Hammers he couldn't settle in London and moved to Sheffield United before joining Everton. A Scotland international who scored against England at Wembley in the Euro 2000 Play-off, Hutchison turned down a new contract at Everton to join Sunderland, and the Blues loss was undoubtedly Sunderland's gain

He joined Peter Reid's Sunderland in the summer of 2000 for £2.5 million and with his off-field problems put behind him, Hutchison has proved to be a big hit with the Black Cats, and then moved back to West Ham United in 2001.

簡介﹕
Born in South Africa but brought up in Australia, Craig was confident enough in his own ability to write to several English clubs as a 15 year old asking for a trial. Middlesbrough were the only ones that replied and so it was there that he established himself in English football, where his consistency and battling qualities soon brought him to the attention of bigger clubs. He signed for Liverpool in April 1981, still only 20 years old but with over 60 League appearance to his credit already.

When he watched his new club win the European Cup in Paris only weeks after his arrival at Anfield, he must have dreamed of being part of similar success. But the reality proved much tougher and it was only in the second half of the following season (1981-82) that he was given the opportunity to show what he could do. He quickly became a crowd favourite because supporters recognised that he would run until he dropped, but he could also be a frustrating player to watch although his ability, courage and strength were never in doubt.

His fortunes started to change on a freezing December night when Arsenal visited Anfield for a League Cup replay. After being substitute in 3 of the first 4 League matches, he had been largely overlooked since then. But his first goal for the club 5 minutes into extra-time helped see the Reds through to the quarter-final, although Craig failed to play any further part in the competition as his team went on to retain the trophy. But he was picked for the first League match after that Wembley success and played some part in all but one of the remaining League matches, contributing 6 goals as Liverpool regained the championship from Aston Villa.

The following season (1982-83) was Craig's most productive as a goalscorer - 10 from 41 starts. He played even more matches the next season but only managed 4 goals although he did get his hands on the European Cup as a player just 3 years after watching his new team-mates lift the trophy on that night in France so soon after he had arrived at the club. However, it seemed that he was not in favour with Joe Fagan, who had taken over from Bob Paisley, the man who had signed him from Middlesbrough. But when Joe stepped down after 2 seasons in charge, Craig was given fresh hope and encouragement from his former team-mate Kenny Dalglish, who now had the difficult task of leading the club forward after Heysel. Craig played over 50 times in the 'Double' season of 1985-96 and was a key member of the team. The joy of scoring in an F.A. Cup Final was plain for all to see !

After a promising start to the following season, the recurrence of a back injury kept him on the sidelines. But worse news was to come that Christmas. His sister was seriously ill in a Morocco hospital and he rushed immediately to be at her side. All this was kept from the Press at the time - and of course the supporters had no idea of the tragedy that was unfolding in his private life. His mind was obviously on other things and although he never gave up when he had a Liverpool shirt on, it was clear and natural that his family came first. Further injuries meant a reduced number of appearances in 1987-88 and he finally left England to return to Australia after making his final appearance in the best-forgotten Cup Final against Wimbledon. A year later, devastated by what had happened at Hillsborough, he not only raised thousands of pounds in his own country for the Fund which had been set up but also willingly flew half-way across the world to attend the memorial service at Anfield seven days after the disaster and stayed on to help counsel the bereaved families, a wonderful gesture which endeared him to Liverpool fans everywhere.

The title of his autobiography "Walk Alone" was apt because in many ways he was a refreshing change from the 'typical' professional footballer. And the fact this his book was dedicated "In Memory of the Victims of Heysel & Hillsborough" showed how much he cared about the community that had accepted him as one of their own and who will always have fond memories of a player who ran himself into the ground in the Liverpool cause.

簡介﹕
Ray's arrival at Anfield a few days before his 23rd birthday in July 1974 was completely overshadowed by the shock news on the same day that Bill Shankly, the man who had signed him from Arsenal, had decided to step down from the manager's chair with immediate effect. Despite being so young, Ray had already achieved great success at Highbury, helping the Gunners win the Fairs' Cup in 1970 and then being an integral part of their 'Double' triumph a year later.

As a forward, he had scored 53 times from 158 First Division matches and had had a terrific understanding and partnership with John Radford. But he never made the immediate impact at Liverpool that had been hoped and expected. This was possibly due to the fact that John Toshack missed most of the first half of the 1974-75 season because of injury, that Phil Boersma was not the kind of 'Radford' partner he had been used to and also perhaps because questions were being asked about his weight, although nobody of course knew at that time (not even Ray himself) how the early stages of Parkinson's Disease were already affecting his physical condition.

Ray scored on his League debut at Chelsea and again a week later when Spurs were the visitors to Merseyside. In fact, he had a run of 16 League games before John Toshack returned to fitness and took his place. Ray only played in a further 9 First Division fixtures in the second half of the season and a total of only 5 goals from 25 matches was a meagre return from a young striker who had enjoyed such a good reputation in London. Maybe Ray's stay at Liverpool would have been only a brief one had it not been for a master-stroke by the astute Bob Paisley half-way through the 1975-76 season, when he asked his cumbersome forward to play instead in a midfield role, a move so successful that it immediately saw off Peter Cormack, who had played in that position for the last two seasons.

By the end of the year, Ray had made the No. 5 shirt his own and added championship & UEFA cup winners' medals to the haul he already had from his Arsenal days. For the next five seasons, he was a regular in the side and enjoyed unparalleled success as Liverpool dominated domestic and European football. Over that period he only missed 5 First Division games and became one of very few players from any club to win three winners' medals in the European champions' cup. His success with Liverpool brought him nearly 20 full England caps to add to the 6 he had gained at Under-23 level as a youngster in the Arsenal team. He also contributed a marvellous total of 49 goals for the Reds in all competitions during those amazing five years and his runs from midfield into scoring positions brought him almost as many goals as he created for others with his astute vision and distribution of the ball.

One of the most important goals he ever scored came in the semi-final of the European cup in 1981 when the odds were stacked against Liverpool after Bayern Munich had ground out a 0-0 draw on Merseyside. An already-depleted Liverpool team suffered an early setback when Kenny Dalglish limped off injured early on but Ray's experience and composure finally told when 7 minutes from time he strode forward to collect David's Johnson's pass and stroked a firm right-foot shot away from the home keeper for the priceless away goal that would take the club through to their 3rd European cup final in 5 seasons.

Ray was 30 that summer and before the mid-way stage of the 1981-82 season his place in the side was first threatened and then taken by Ronnie Whelan. Ray decided to move to Swansea to join his former team-mate John Toshack but not before he had played enough games to qualify for his 6th League championship medal. He later had spells back in his native North-East with Hartlepool & Sunderland but by this time the onset of the terrible disease he had been suffering from became more acute and more public. He coped bravely with increased lack of mobility and dependence on drugs to control his condition and became a public figure in the battle to make the Public more aware of it and provide funds for research. In 1991 his loyalty to both Arsenal & Liverpool was rewarded with a well-attended testimonial match at Highbury, an emotional experience for him and his family and all the supporters who more than ever appreciated what he had done for the two clubs at which he had spent most of his playing career.

簡介﹕
Local lad Chris came through the Junior ranks at Anfield and signed professional forms on his 17th birthday in October 1960 but had to patiently wait until March 1963 before Bill Shankly gave him his debut in a home fixture with West Bromwich Albion. Chris made 6 League appearances in 1962-63 and just another 6 the following year but by the end of the 1964-65 season he had taken over Ronnie Moran's full-back slot.

Chris played in 32 consecutive First Division games that season and scored the first two of what would be a remarkable total for a full-back of 61 goals for the club in competitive matches. He was also a proud member of the Liverpool team that won the F.A. cup for the first time in the club's history. He then missed just THREE of the next 336 League games, a quite remarkable 'attendance record', helping his side win the championship in 1966, reach the Cup winners' cup final the same year and another F.A. cup final in 1971.

Nicknamed "The Silent Knight" because of the quiet, uncomplicated way he just got on with his job on the field, he was an extremely reliable member of Liverpool's team for many years. Even approaching his 30th birthday, he still retained the fitness and stamina to play in every single one of the 66 competitive games the club played in four different competitions during the 1972-73 season, his reward being further winners' medals in the championship and UEFA cup. Despite being injured at QPR in November 1973 and only making one more League appearance that season, Bill Shankly still picked him as 'twelfth man' for the 1974 F.A. cup final.

Bob Paisley only selected Chris 10 times when he took over the manager's chair - and only then because Phil Thompson was injured in a home game with Stoke City. But as soon as Thompson was fit again, he went straight back into the team and Lawler never played for the first-team again, apart from one last match in the UEFA cup the following season. Chris, who was capped 4 times for England in full internationals and scored on his England debut against Malta at Wembley, moved to Portsmouth a month later who were managed at the time by his former team-mate, Ian St. John. He stayed on the South coast for nearly two years before returning to the North-West and ending his playing days with Stockport County.

簡介﹕
Liverpool-born Sammy was an Anfield apprentice before signing professional forms for the club in April 1976, soon after his 17th birthday. His lack of height and stocky build did not prevent him from becoming a hard-working midfielder for a number of years as Liverpool's domination of domestic and European football in the 1970's continued on into the next decade.

Sammy scored on his League debut in April 1978, with it must be said a fortuitous shot which the Leicester goalkeeper somehow allowed to creep under his body - but they all count ! But his appearances over the next two seasons were limited and he only began to establish himself as a first-team regular following Jimmy Case's departure to Brighton in the summer of 1981. Liverpool lost their League championship to Aston Villa but received ample compensation in the knock-out competitions, winning the League cup for the first time (although it took a replay to beat Second Division West Ham) and then defeating Real Madrid at the Parc dec Princes in Paris to take the European cup for the 3rd time. Sammy played in both finals and would also win other cup winners' medals - as well as three successive championships - during the next 3 years. His consistent club form brought him to the attention of the national manager and he was capped 14 times for his country.

After the heady achievements of 1984, Sammy's form dipped from its usual high standards and he was called on only rarely during the second half of the 1984-85 season. He was also in and out of the team the next year and it was not too much of a surprise when he agreed to join Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 1986. He only had a year in London before seeking a change of fortune in the Spanish First Division with Osasuna. Sammy returned to England after two years in Spain and briefly represented a couple of other Football League clubs before returning to Anfield to become an enthusiastic and popular member of the club's 'backroom' team.

簡介﹕

簡介﹕
Kirkby-born Terry McDermott supported Liverpool as a boy but his first professional club was Bury, from where he moved to Newcastle United in February 1973. He played in 56 League matches for the Magpies and was one of two of their players (the other being Alan Kennedy) who played against Liverpool in the 1974 F.A. cup final and who later moved to Anfield. Terry returned to his native Merseyside in November 1974 when he was a few days short of his 23rd birthday as one of new manager Bob Paisley's earliest signings.

Although Terry played in six successive First Division games soon after his arrival, it was a frustrating time for him to be in and out of the team as he settled in at his new club. In 1975-76 he was selected for the opening 7 League games but after that was only called on twice more that year, both times as a substitute. It began to look as if a change of club would be the only way to resurrect his career but thankfully he stayed patient and his reward finally came in the memorable 1976-77 season when he was finally accepted not just as a good squad-player but an important member of the side itself. He made 26 First Division appearances that year and picked up the first of 4 championship medals. He only scored once in the League but the goals would come as he became known not just as a creative midfield player whose passing was so accurate but also as a 'runner' from deep who would often end up in or around the opposition penalty-box to finish what he or someone else had started.

The disappointment of again finishing on the losing side in an F.A. cup final was soon forgotten as a typical run into space to collect Steve Heighway's pass saw him fire the Reds ahead in the 1977 European cup final. Terry would add two more winners' medals to his collection in the world's most prestigious knock-out competition and many other team and individual honours would follow, including being named "Footballer of the Year" by the Sportswriters in 1980. In four seasons when he was at his peak, he contributed nearly 50 League goals as well as many more vital strikes in cup competitions. He became a regular member of the England squad and was capped over 20 times. Even in 1981-82 as he passed his 30th birthday and when his position in the side was being seriously challenged by younger men, he recorded his highest total of League goals in a single season for Liverpool (14) from only 29 appearances.

His long-range shooting became a feature of his game to add to his vision and tactical awareness and his chip in the F.A. cup semi-final with Everton in 1977 was voted 'Goal of the Season' by the BBC. Another awesome strike dumped Spurs out of the F.A. cup in 1980 but perhaps his most memorable goal had came against the same opposition at Anfield two years earlier when a sweeping move from one end of the pitch to the other saw him race 70 yards to powerfully head Steve Heighway's cross past Barry Daines, the final blow of Tottenham's 7-0 humiliation on that late-Summer's day. He also scored a stunning hat-trick in only 16 minutes when Kevin Keegan returned with Hamburg for the second leg of the Super Cup in 1977 and anothe European hat-trick when the Finns from Oulu were trounced 10-1 in the Champions' cup of 1980-81.

By the start of the 1982-83 season, it was clear that Terry would finally have to look elsewhere for first-team football and after a farewell substitute appearance against Southampton at Anfield on 25th September 1982, he returned to St. James' Park. After two short spells in Ireland and Cyprus, he signed for Newcastle for a third time and linked up again with Kevin Keegan, who had returned to England after an 8-year 'exile' in Spain to take up the demanding role of manager with the North-East club. Patience was the key to Terry's eventual success as a player. He wanted to play so badly for the club he had grown up supporting and when he finally left Liverpool after over 300 games and nearly 80 goals, he had probably surpassed his wildest dreams by achieving as much as he did during the 8 years he was at Anfield.

簡介﹕
Halewood born Steve McMahon was Kenny Dalglish's first signing as Liverpool manager in September 1985.

A former Everton ball boy, who graduated through the ranks at Goodison to captain the Blues during the early eighties, McMahon's signature was first sought after by the Reds two years previous.

Not wanting to risk the wrath of the Evertonians he opted instead to join Aston Villa but failed to settle in the Midlands and, a month into Liverpool's momentous double winning season of 85/86, Kenny Dalglish paid ?50,000 to acquire his services.

A fine striker of the ball, he scored many memorable goals during his time at Anfield and in one of his early games for the Reds he famously hit the back of the net in a memorable 3-2 Merseyside derby success.

Although he at first he vied with Kevin McDonald for a regular first team place at Anfield, making 23 appearances as the League and FA Cup was won, his combative midfield play was something Liverpool had lacked since the departure of Graeme Souness and the following season saw him fully establish himself in the number eleven shirt.

With quality players around him, McMahon excelled. Strong in the tackle and a fine passer of the ball, he was instrumental during the unforgettable 17th title triumph in 1987/88. International recognition also came his way and after winning another championship medal in 1990 he was selected in Bobby Robson's World Cup squad for Italia '90.

Injury forced him to miss half of the 1990/91 season and following the arrival of Graeme Souness as boss in 1991 McMahon's days at Anfield were numbered. Manchester City paid ?00,000 for him, and at the time it seemed good business for a 30 year old. However, finding a replacement was not easy and in the prevailing years he was sorely missed.

After hanging up his boots he embarked on a career in management, starting at Swindon Town, and he is currently boss at Blackpool.

簡介﹕
Hailed by his former Liverpool manager and team-mate Kenny Dalglish as "one of the finest midfield players of his generation" the great Dane was a contemporary in the celebrated Ajax youth academy, with Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard and Jesper Olsen. He also came under the influence of Dutch master Johann Cruyff.

Molby was signed by Liverpool boss Joe Fagan for £225,000 in August 1984, following the departure of Graeme Souness. The fee was a bargain for one of the most successful of English football's foreign imports, who combined subtlety and power. Molby's passing, long or short, was wonderfully measured.

He was also an expert penalty taker, scoring with 40 of his 42 spot kicks and in November 1986 earned a niche in the record books with a penalty hat trick against Coventry in the League Cup.

Molby made 52 appearances in Liverpool's League and FA Cup double season of 1985/86 before playing for Denmark in the World Cup Finals in Mexico. He won a second title medal in 1990 and another F A Cup medal in 1992. Although twice on the verge of moves (to Barcelona and Everton) he became the first foreigner to serve 10 years with one English club before becoming Swansea player boss in 1996.

簡介﹕
Nigel began his professional career at Bournemouth and had three good years with the south coast club before moving to Chelsea and it was from there that he joined Liverpool to strengthen the squad which had just won the League & F.A. cup 'Double' in 1986. However, despite the experience gained from over 250 League matches with Bournemouth & Chelsea, Nigel was never much more than a squad player at Anfield and found it hard to command a regular place in the club's first-team.

He did win a championship medal in 1988 but also suffered the disappointment of two Wembley cup final defeats with the Reds - the 1987 League cup to Arsenal and the F.A. cup upset caused by Wimbledon a year later which deprived Liverpool of their second 'Double' in three seasons. Nigel was a versatile player who was comfortable in a number of different positions and maybe that versatility counted against him in the end ??Halfway through the 1988-89 season, when it was clear that his chances of being a first-team regular were still limited, he decided to return to London and joined Queens Park Rangers. After a short spell at Loftus Road, he then moved north of the border to play for Glasgow giants Rangers.

簡介﹕
Graeme Souness had long admired the talents of Paul Stewart before paying Tottenham £2.5 million for his services during the summer of 1992.

In his White Hart Lane days, Stewart had gone from a striker to a central midfielder with an eye for goal, and won three England caps under Graham Taylor. He was in Terry Venables Tottenham side that won the FA Cup in 1991 against Nottingham Forest and he scored in a 2-1 win.

Shortly after arriving at Anfield Stewart had looked impressive during the pre-season tour and made his Reds debut in the 4-3 Charity Shield defeat by Leeds United at Wembley. He then marked his Anfield debut with a goal in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United and scored on his European debut for the Reds with two goals in a 6-1 win over Apollon Limassol.

However, Stewart suffered niggling injury problems in his debut season that restricted his progress. The following 1993-94 season saw Stewart out of favour for the opening seven games of that campaign but he was restored to the side by Souness as a replacement for Jan Molby, and was then dropped after the humiliating 3-0 defeat by Newcastle at St James' Park. He didn't play again that season.

Stewart himself would admit that he was a major disappointment at Anfield. He never really got to grips with the Reds style of play and it was no surprise when he was shipped out on extended loan spells to the likes of Crystal Palace, Wolves and Burnley before Peter Reid signed him for Sunderland in 1996. He later had spells with Stoke and Workington.

簡介﹕
When Graeme Souness signed England international Michael Thomas from Arsenal in October 1991 it caused something of a shock, because Thomas of course scored that goal at Anfield in 1989 that gave the Gunners the League Championship.

He arrived as a replacement for Steve McMahon in a £2 million deal and made an impressive debut as a substitute in a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur in White Hart Lane.

His best moments for Liverpool was in the FA Cup. He scored a superb winning goal in front of the Kop against Aston Villa at Anfield, to send Liverpool through to the semi-finals. Then in the final at Wembley against Sunderland he scored the first goal with a magnificent volley to set the Reds on the way to a 2-0 victory.

The following season Thomas was hit by injuries. In an FA Cup tie with Bolton Wanderers at Anfield he ruptured his achilles tendon and was stretchered off, and didn't return to action for over six months.

Thomas was a substitute for the 1995 Coca Cola Cup win over Bolton at Wembley, but didn't see any action.

He left Anfield to team up with Graeme Souness at Benfica in 1997

簡介﹕
Graeme Souness went back to his old club Rangers to snap up winger Mark Walters for £1.3 million in the summer of 1991. Walters had made a big impression in Scotland but was eager for a move back to the top flight in England and Liverpool represented a marvellous opportunity for him to show off his talents.

With John Barnes suffering from injury problems Walters was seen as the ideal replacement by Souness. But that proved too tough a burden. He never really hit the heights at Anfield and was largely overshadowed by the emergence of Steve McManaman.

Undoubtedly there were some highlights for Walters at Anfield. Probably his best moment came when he scored the winner for Liverpool against Auxerre in front of a delirious Kop, as the Reds overturned a 2-0 deficit from the first leg to win 3-2 on aggregate.

Another poignant moment in his first season came when he scored a vital last minute goal, again in front of the Kop, that sealed a 2-0 win over Manchester United that handed Leeds United the title.

He ended his first season with an FA Cup medal after Liverpool beat Sunderland at Wembley but he was forced to watch from the bench as his replacement McManaman tormented the Mackems defence.

The following season saw Walters score a hat-trick at home to Coventry City but it was a season of struggle at Anfield. When Souness resigned the following season the writing was on the wall as far as Walters' Liverpool career was concerned.

He was used largely as a substitute by new boss Roy Evans and was again on the bench as Liverpool won the 1995 Coca Cola League Cup Final at Wembley against Bolton.

His middle name was Everton and he had a trademark piece of skill called the step-over which he used to deceive opponents. After a couple of loan spells, Walters left for Stoke City in 1996.

Including season 2000-2001 Walters was still going strong playing for Bristol Rovers and played in a memorable Worthington Cup win over Everton. He also regularly stars for the Rangers veterans team in the Masters Tournament.

簡介﹕
Midfielder John made a high-profile move to Anfield in the Spring of 1984 after making nearly 300 League appearances for Ipswich Town, with whom he had also won the F.A. and UEFA cups. With the impending departure of inspirational skipper Graeme Souness, Wark's great experience and impressive goalscoring record while playing for the Suffolk club were no doubt seen as a way of reducing the impact of his fellow Scot's subsequent transfer to Sampdoria in Italy.

John scored on his debut at Watford and made 9 First Division appearances as the championship was won for a third successive year but he was ineligible to play in the semi-final and final of the European cup. Twenty-seven years old shortly before his first full season as a Liverpool player started, Wark should have been approaching his peak and he seemed to confirm that with 18 League goals plus a further 9 in cup competitions, including a hat-trick in the home leg against Lech Poznan as Liverpool started their defence of the Champions' cup and three more when York City were thrashed 7-0 in an F.A. cup 5th round replay. But injury and the emergence of Jan Molby restricted John to just 11 'starts' in the 'Double' League and F.A. cup triumph of 1986 and after failing to regain a regular place in the side he rejoined his former club at Portman Road at the start of 1988.

The broken leg he suffered while at Anfield almost certainly prevented him from spending a longer period on Merseyside. Once fully-fit again, even though he was by now appraoching his mid-30's, John only missed 2 League games in 2 seasons for Ipswich at the end of the 1980's and continued his astonishing goals-per-game ratio with 26 in those two years to take his total in League matches alone for Liverpool and Ipswich close to the 150 mark, a remarkable total for a midfield player even though many of those came from the penalty-spot. John's impressive final figures for Liverpool show 42 goals from 102 appearances in League and cup competitions.

簡介﹕
The gifted successor to Ray Kennedy on the left flank of Liverpool's midfield, Whelan made a massive contribution to the club's majestic triumphs under Bob Paisley and Kenny Dalglish in the 1980's winning six League title medals, three FA Cup, a European Cup and three Milk Cup medals.

A natural footballer, Whelan was signed by Paisley from Home Farm in his native Dublin in October 1979, just after his 18th birthday. He gave a hint of things to come by scoring on his debut against Stoke in April 1981, the first of 73 goals scored for Liverpool in almost 500 senior appearances.

He had a talent for scoring spectacular and crucial goals, including a magnificent swerving shot that beat Manchester United at Wembley in the 1983 Milk Cup Final, the year after he scored twice at the same venue in the final of the same competition against Tottenham. As well as fierce shooting power Whelan’s lean build incorporated tigerish tackling ability.

Later in his Anfield career he captained Liverpool and switched inside to a central midfield role. Whelan emulated his father, Ronnie senior, by representing the Republic of Ireland, for whom he won 53 caps. He left Anfield in 1994 to manage Southend, followed by a spell in charge of Greek club Panionios and then Olympiakos Nicosia of Cyprus.

簡介﹕
One of British football's all-time great goalscorers former Kop fan Aldridge bore an uncanny resemblance to Ian Rush and after his ?50,000 signing from Oxford earlier in the year took over the great Wales star's role when Rush moved to Juventus in 1987.

"Aldo", as he was nicknamed, proved a huge success, linking up with other new captures John Barnes and Peter Beardsley in Kenny Dalglish's re-shaped team. His 26 goals in 36 outings fuelled Liverpool's drive to the title and a record equalling 29-matches unbeaten from the start of the season.

But Aldridge and Liverpool missed out on the Double when his FA Cup Final penalty was saved by Wimbledon's Dave Beasant. But the Merseyside-born Republic of Ireland striker, who launched his career with South Liverpool and Newport, resumed normal scoring business even when Rush returned after only one season in Italy.

Aldridge returned to Wembley to collect a FA Cup winners medal in 1989 before a ?.1 million move to Spanish club Real Sociedad. He joined Tranmere for ?50,000 in 1991, becoming player boss five years later. He hung up his boots in 1998, approaching his 40th birthday, after a club and country career spanning 882 appearances and 474 goals. He guided Tranmere to Wembley in the 2000 Worthington Cup Final.

簡介﹕
Rainford-born Louis, who signed for Liverpool in January 1953, was a centre-forward who made 100 appearances for Liverpool's first-team in the rest of the decade, scoring 40 goals in the process.

He was given his debut at Aston Villa on 7th March 1953 and played in 7 more League games before the end of the season, scoring 3 goals. His most productive season for the club was in 1953-54, when he hit the net 13 times in 24 League matches.

On his day he could be brilliant (a hat-trick against Manchester United in August 1953 and four against Burnley {all in the first half} at Anfield a month later prove that) but he was never considered to be a regular in the side and when Dave Hickson arrived from Goodison in November 1959, Louis faded out of the first-team picture altogether and was quickly transferred to Blackburn Rovers.

The first footballer from Guinea to play in England, Camara finished his first season at Anfield as runner-up to Michael Owen in the Anfield scoring charts with 10 goals. A real crowd favourite, the pacy Camara scored on his debut at Sheffield Wednesday and continued to produce ferocious strikes at goal throughout the campaign. Capable of the unexpected he showed commitment when he played and scored in the 1-0 Anfield win over West Ham, just hours after the death of his father.

He started his career with French club St Etienne in 1990 and had spells with RC Lens and Olympique Marseille - with whom he appeared in a UEFA Cup final before G廨ard Houllier snapped him up for ?.5 million.

Harry 'Smiler' Chambers sent fear into the opposition with his ferocious left foot shot, and averaged a goal every two games.

Chambers topped the Liverpool goal charts in the first five post-World War One seasons, and played a pivotal role in the Reds winning two consecutive championships in 1922 and 1923.

He scored a memorable hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Everton at Anfield in October 1922 and also won eight caps for England during his time at Liverpool, scoring four goals.

Harry continued to score with great regularity and was the club's only ever-present during the 1925-26 & 1926-27 League seasons. He left Liverpool for West Brom in 1928, having averaged almost a goal every two games, but was used as a centre half by the Baggies.

After retiring from the game he continued to play the game he loved for Shropshire team Oakengates until he was 52. He died in 1949.

簡介﹕
Son of the legendary Brian Clough, Nigel made his name at Nottingham Forest under the managership of his father and had a very impressive strike rate for a midfield player of a goal nearly every three games. Though never blessed with much pace, he is an intelligent player with good awareness, vision and passing ability and thisled to his transfer to Liverpool for a fee well in excess of 2 million pounds in the Summer of 1993. However, he struggled to hold down a place in the Reds' first team and eventually lost his place to the emerging talent of Robbie Fowler. This also resulted in him losing his place in the England squad so in January 1996 he signed for City for ?,500,000 in the hope of resurrecting his career and improving City's strike rate.

Nigel's City career never really took off and he spent most of his time at Maine Road in the reserves. Shortly after the start of the 1998-99 season the remaining year of his contract was paid off by the club and he retired from playing.

簡介﹕
Cannock's finest export Stanley Victor Collymore became Liverpool's record signing during the summer of 1995 when Roy Evans paid Nottingham Forest ?.5 million for one of football's hottest properties.

Everton also made a bid for Collymore but the striker wanted to join the Reds. After an excellent pre-season, Collymore made an explosive Anfield debut with a stunning goal on the opening day of the 1995-96 season in a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

However, in his next game at Leeds United he was injured and missed the following three games. Again though he bounced back in style with another stunning strike from 30-yards in a 3-0 win over reigning champions Blackburn Rovers at Anfield.

Despite these spectacular strikes Collymore struggled to settle. He scored just two goals in seven starts and was dropped to the bench with Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush paired in attack. Frustrated, Collymore took his problems out in the open and a controversial magazine interview, when he questioned Roy Evans tactics and criticised the club, did little to help his cause.

After a clear the air meeting with Evans, Collymore began to do his talking where it mattered and established himself as a Kop favourite. Restored to the attack, he formed an excellent partnership with Robbie Fowler. Collymore scored 17 goals and created countless others for the likes of Fowler, and played his part in a quite extraordinary 4-3 thriller at Anfield against Newcastle United.

Collymore scored twice that night including an incredible injury time winner, which proved to be his finest moment as a Liverpool player, but the season ended on a depressing low when Liverpool lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United, and a below par Collymore was substituted.

The following season, which turned out to be Collymore's last at Anfield, was even more controversial. He found himself in and out of the side and, to make matters worse, he refused to turn out for the reserves at Tranmere Rovers one midweek evening and was fined. Another major problem was his refusal to live closer to Liverpool, and he commuted from his home in Cannock.

With the emergence of Michael Owen Liverpool cut their losses and sold Collymore to Aston Villa, the team he supported as a boy for ? million. However the striker was to have further off field problems which tarnished his career. After undergoing treatment for stress Collymore moved to Leicester City but after a good start he had an argument with manager Peter Taylor.

Bradford City then took a chance of the enigmatic striker and sure enough he made an electric start with a magnificent overhead kick in the derby with Leeds United, but it all ended too early with the Bantams cutting their wage bill.

Collymore then tried his luck in Spain with Real Oviedo but after being told he was overweight and having to settle for a role on the bench he decided to quit. Sensationally announcing his decision to retire from football at the age of 30, Collymore said he was hanging up his boots "to explore other career opportunities."

簡介﹕
Howard Gayle achieved two notable claims to fame during his short, but sweet, Liverpool first team career.

A boyhood Liverpudlian from the Toxteth district of the city Gayle fulfilled a dream when he signed for his idols in 1977 after being spotted playing Sunday League football by John Bennison.

He quickly established himself as a key member of Roy Evans' all-conquering reserve side and in October 1980 made his first team debut at Manchester City. He came on as a second half substitute for David Fairclough and in doing so became the first black player to ever represent the club.

Blessed with lightening speed and intricate skill Gayle's most memorable moment in a Liverpool shirt came six months later in the impressive setting of Munich's Olympic Stadium. It was the second leg of the European Cup semi-final against the mighty Bayern Munich and Liverpool faced a daunting task in their bid to reach the final in Paris.

Sent on a substitute for the injured Kenny Dalglish early in the game Gayle made a dramatic entrance. He terrorised the Germans with his blistering pace and dazzling ball control, while his frequent probing forays into Bayern territory silenced the vast home crowd.
