Tanbo art is a Japanese creation in which people plant various types and colors of rice and ‘grow’ a giant picture in rice paddy fields.
It all started back in 1993 when the village of Inakadate, about 600 miles north of Tokyo, was looking to create a project that would ‘revitalize’ the local economy. They needed a way to attract tourists and Japanese rice field art was born.

Every April, the villagers meet and decide what to plant for the year. Prior to planting, farmers sketch out the designs on computers to figure out where and how to plant the rice. In 2007, over 700 people helped to plant the design. In Inakadate, the fields used are approximately 15,000 square meters (3.7 acres). Following Inakadate’s example, other villages such as Yonezawa in Yamagata prefecture, have started to create their own tanbo art. 自1993年以來，日本青森縣田舍館村每年都會舉辦一次「稻田藝術節」展示農民所做的稻田畫以吸引遊客.
In 2008, it was planned to change the lower part of the field to include the logos of Japan Airlines and To-o Nippo, a local newspaper, for a reported 2 million yen to offset increased costs. The members of the local landowners' organization, along with the former mayor, protested, saying that the land would not be leased from the following year if the plan to display advertising logos was not abandoned. Woah!!! really amazing and i'm filled with awe after seeing all these photos. The villagers really come together to perform such wonderful art on their rice fields. Just wondering how they are able to match those computer printouts to the field space.......... they must really need precise measurements and calculations.... Stunning paddy fields! 日本稻田藝術作品甚至比麥田怪圈更為驚人，它們吸引了很多遊客前來觀光。
有的作品是商家的廣告，但雖然具有商業色彩，依然不能抵擋作品本身獨特的魅力。
