【逆水寒】是根據與金庸、古龍、梁羽生齊名的武俠小說四大家之一溫瑞安的同名武俠小說改編，更被喻為是《四大名捕系列》中最曲折、最詭秘，且被認為是最適合拍攝成長篇連續劇的作品，全劇沒有做太大的改編，基本上是忠實於原著的。因此，溫瑞安亦點名稱讚，認為在他所有小說改編的電視劇中，這部拍得最好。

不同於金庸武俠的「俠之大者」，溫瑞安筆下的人物俠骨柔情中總帶著份冷酷或鮮明的個性。此劇講述北宋時期江湖大俠戚少商蒙冤逃亡，在神捕鐵手、昔日情敵霹靂堂主雷卷等義士的幫助下冤案得雪的故事。此劇更以流傳在宋朝時期的「逆水寒劍」為主線，講述了宋朝的八大寨主保護「逆水寒劍」的江湖故事。

兩位男主角張智霖、鍾漢良的表現，獲得溫瑞安的肯定。張智霖在劇中展現成熟的形象，演繹一位被朋友背叛而連累了兄弟的大俠，給人滄桑又悲情之感。另一位小生鍾漢良也首次演出大反派，演活了自負又自卑的顧惜朝。加上內地女演員宋佳飾演女主角傅晚晴、李小冉扮演極具個性的俠女息紅淚，展現新派精彩武俠世界。
