BERLIN: Werder Bremen midfielder Mesut Oezil was Bayern Munich’s chief tormentor by creating two goals and scoring one of his own as the defending Bundesliga champions were routed 5-2 at home yesterday.
Oezil, 19, provided the two final passes which helped put Bremen 2-0 up at half-time at Bayern’s Allianz Arena and the Germany Under-21 international then bossed the midfield as the hosts were crushed.
Sweden striker Markus Rosenberg scored goals either side of half-time to leave Bayern’s dreams of going top of the league in tatters.
Bayern came into the game without Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who picked up a leg injury in Wednesday’s 1-0 Champions League win at Steaua Bucharest and were second in the table before this weekend.
And Bayern midfielder Franck Ribery was denied his first appearance of the season following his Euro 2008 ankle injury after picking up a thigh strain while training on Friday.
In contrast, Bremen only managed their first league win of the season last weekend against lowly Energie Cottbus and were held to a goalless draw at home on Tuesday by Cyprus minnows Anorthosis Famagusta in the Champions League. But Bremen, last season’s Bundesliga runners-up, dominated the champions yesterday.
Schalke went top thanks to an own goal at home to 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt.
Brazilian defender Chris was sent off on 34 minutes for assaulting Germany defender Heiko Westermann and on 41 minutes Frankfurt’s misery was complete when Patrick Ochs slid the ball under his own goalkeeper.
Also yesterday, Hertha Berlin went seventh with a 1-0 win at Borussia Moechengladbach, while mid-table Arminia Bielefeld beat Cologne 2-0.
