According to your drawing / cutting, you have 2 long triangle with 2 ladder shapes. The area of 2 long triangle is 2 each of (base x height / 2), which is 2x(3x8/2)= 24, and the area of 2 ladder shapes is 2each of (upper side + lower side)xheight /2), which is 2x((3+5)x5/2)=40.
