A pictograph is a symbol representing a concept, object, activity, place or event by illustration. They were used by ancient peoples and are usually painted on cliffs, rock surfaces, and in caves. They are also sometimes referred to as "rock art". Pictographs have been discovered throughout all of Canada. They may even constitute Canada's oldest and most widespread artistic tradition. There is no definite process for precise dating of pictographs, other than educated speculation based on datable archaeological remains.

Pictographs can be found on rock cliffs lining many of Manitoba's waterways and the ones at Tramping Lake on the Grass River are some of the best examples of this artform in Canada. They were painted by the Cree and Ojibwa.

The Tramping Lake paintings were placed on a vertical rock surface that is close enough to the water that they could be painted from a canoe. The pigment used for the paintings is red ochre, which is clay containing a high concentration of iron oxide. The agent that binds the pigment to the rock may have come from any number of animal by-products. The majority of the images were traced with the finger, and some could have been drawn with brushes made of animal fur or plant fibers.

The paintings at Tramping Lake are estimated to be between 1,500 - 3,000 years old. During that time, First Nations peoples designated this area one of their sacred places by painting designs depicting wildlife, people and traditional objects. They are located 7 kms southwest of Weskuko Falls on Tramping Lake. Look for the cabin on the southeast shore, the pictographs are almost directly across the lake. The pictographs can only be accessed via boat.
