but, i do speak cantonese instead of mandarin. coz most of the KL ppl speak cantonese.

A few jobs ago I used to work with an older lady from Malaysia who loved to speak Canto to me when she knew I could speak it (her family speaks Hokkien at home)

I didn't know then that in Malaysian Canto, 溝 = dollar = 元／蚊

and "lui" = money = 錢

So the first time the conversation got to money, she said something like (can't remember exactly): "而家出面啲野好貴，去飲餐茶都要成五十溝(AUD)，你趁年輕要揾多啲lui啦"

我: "??????媾咩女話??"

hahaha, so funny.  I have Malaysian friends here too, and I knew 溝 is dollar but not "lui" .

It's not exactly pronounced 女 which has a flat tone - it's higher pitched. Chinese Malaysians can explain...
