執導的《羅浮宮魅影》以及《超級女特工》都曾在中國上映的法國導演讓-保爾·薩羅米，《變色龍》是他的首部部英文影片，儘管之前的全部使用法國演員的《夢遊美利堅》也曾在這裡拍攝。這已經不是他第一次從新聞報導中汲取靈感，《強盜們》和《夢遊美利堅》也是如此，「這類源自真實故事能夠給我以更大的信心」，薩羅米表示。影片開拍前他見到了影片的主人公原型Frederic Bourdin，但在創作劇本階段，他和搭檔一直拒絕這樣做，原因是不希望「愛上角色抑或是被他所嚇住」。扮演Bourdin的馬克安德魯-格隆丁來自加拿大，成名作《愛瘋狂》曾多次在電影節獲獎，後又憑藉《餘生的第一天》榮獲法國凱撒新人獎，他流利的法語以及英文加上一副可以被當做依然處在後青春期的外表令他成為主人公的最佳人選。
