The victory of Hamas in 2006 election over the Fatah and the reaction of Israel & US to the result may shed some light on the prospect of the Middle East peace talk. The success of Hamas in election may attribute to the corruption and the incapacity of the Fatah administration to improve the living condition of the Palestinian people, as well as making any headway in forming an independent Palestinian state. US and Israel refused to recognize the legitimacy of the Hamas administration. In addition, Israel set up blockade to Gaza strip (as she considers Hamas is a terrorist organization), rendering thousands of Palestinian living in miserable condition. On Israel side, two prime ministers, Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin were members of assassination group. In fact, Shamir was wanted for killing a UN peace agent. Let's not forget Yasser Arafat, who signed the Oslo Accords, was also a terrorist. I personally consider the hope for peace died with the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. The stalling of peace talk would enable Israel to build settlements incessantly. The lands of the settlement would become Israel territory and would not be on the negotiation table. Just look at the pockets of lands that may be the future Palestinian state, do you see any semblance of a sovereign country? |
