The story background is Hong Kong, mate.  You know how "good" Hong Kongers' spoken English was.  He may have done it on purpose, who knows.  Afterall, London accent, American accent, Kiwi accent, Kangaroo, African...  etc. Ah, Malaysian / Singaporean accent - North American English is not the only English on planet earth.
